It's important to note that sensitive dependence on initial conditions does not mean total unpredictability. The near-future is predictable, and it's always possible in retrospect to explain why something happened, in terms of past events.
History is like this, in my opinion - in general tomorrow can be expected to be like today, and this year's effects can be traced back to last year's causes, but it can still be surprising which one of the infinite number of plausible futures occur given today's events.
