2014-04-05 13:39:13 : <Dan> Afternoon, folks!
2014-04-05 13:41:20 : <sean> Hey Dan.
2014-04-05 13:43:56 : <Dan> Working on the car camera & fog lights at the moment. I finally got the buss bar I need to wire everything up to the battery & ground.
2014-04-05 13:46:02 : <sean> car camera? adding a backup cam?
2014-04-05 13:47:37 : <Dan> I'll still have to run the wires through the car body, & drill some holes in the luggage rack rails.
2014-04-05 13:49:54 : <Dan> Add a back-up cam and a forward com, as well as fog lights.
2014-04-05 13:51:17 : <Dan> https://www.facebook.com/dan.hollifield/media_set?set=a.1020320824254378...
2014-04-05 13:53:48 : <Dan> Taking a short break while I finish running the ground wiresthrough the crossbar I made.
2014-04-05 13:54:30 : <sean> i have been having thoughts of adding a backup cam to the tardis. backing up to trailers causes me to raise the lift gate so I can see.
2014-04-05 13:55:04 : <Dan> There's always magnetic-mount wireless cams.
2014-04-05 13:56:39 : <fredskuentz> greets peeps
2014-04-05 13:56:51 : <Dan> Hiya, Fred!
2014-04-05 13:58:04 : <fredskuentz> so I PM'd Carol from Berkeley on Facebook and said "Larry Niven chat today"
2014-04-05 13:58:21 : <fredskuentz> within Pi seconds, Facebook was asking me to rate Larry Niven books
2014-04-05 13:58:30 : <fredskuentz> unfortunately starting with Ringworld Throne
2014-04-05 13:58:34 : <Dan> Good deal! Thanks, Fred.
2014-04-05 13:58:47 : <fredskuentz> np

2014-04-05 14:14:03 : <Jim> Hi, everybody!
2014-04-05 14:14:14 : <fredskuentz> Hi Jim
2014-04-05 14:21:17 : <Dan> Hiya, Jim.
2014-04-05 14:38:59 : "Hippy" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 14:39:19 : <Hippy> Good afternoon, everyone
2014-04-05 14:40:14 : <fredskuentz> Hi ppy
2014-04-05 14:40:23 : <Hippy> I thought I"d get in early and get a booth
2014-04-05 14:40:33 : <fredskuentz> John Wilkes?
2014-04-05 14:40:48 : <Hippy> Yep! He was a nice guy!
2014-04-05 14:40:52 : <fredskuentz> or Sealy?
2014-04-05 14:41:06 : <Hippy> 2nd Amendment in action
2014-04-05 14:41:39 : <Hippy> Definitely JW, as I don't know who the other person is
2014-04-05 14:42:17 : <Hippy> Now, is Mark Firestone here, or just present as a nick?
2014-04-05 14:44:35 : <Hippy> Also, death Windows 8 and its stupid security. If I'm on the bloody netwok, I should be able to see what's on the bloody network!!
2014-04-05 14:45:25 : <Hippy> Networking in the 21st centtury is such that I have to physically walk to the compuer with a flashdrive to get a document off it. Now, that's progress
2014-04-05 14:46:23 : <sean> I hate windows... well xp is all right.
2014-04-05 14:47:09 : <Hippy> Not accortidng to Microsoft. Last day of support for it is April 8
2014-04-05 14:48:17 : <fredskuentz> Sealy Booth is Angel on Bones :)

2014-04-05 14:48:36 : <fredskuentz> Hippy, it's called 'sneakernet'
2014-04-05 14:49:46 : <Hippy> Well, I certainly don't want to pick up that Seeley Booth. I do like 'sneakernet', though
2014-04-05 14:50:14 : <Hippy> Ah, well, I can thrash out the horrors of just trying to work on a document after the chat
2014-04-05 14:50:25 : <Hippy> In the meantime, how has everyone been?
2014-04-05 14:50:58 : <sean> thats why I have an ftp server. keeps me from having to battle microshaft sharing.
2014-04-05 14:51:29 : <Hippy> It's certainly looking to be the way to go, Sean
2014-04-05 14:51:54 : <sean> tho what the problem is is a permission issue. you have to share the folder and then go into permissions and allow users from outside of the machine to access it.
2014-04-05 14:52:49 : <Hippy> Yeah, I see what you're saying there. It just seems like it should be automatic once all comps are on the same homegroup. I'll deal with it
2014-04-05 14:53:55 : <sean> i have not messed with home groups
2014-04-05 14:54:11 : <sean> sounds like a major step backward.
2014-04-05 14:54:59 : <Hippy> A leap. A half-marathon backward
2014-04-05 14:55:12 : <Hippy> Almost, but not quite, as stupid as user accounts
2014-04-05 14:55:59 : "Gofffan" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 14:56:00 : <Jim> ch o+r
2014-04-05 14:56:02 : <sean> cant agree on user accounts. its just that winblows handles accounts really badly
2014-04-05 14:56:22 : <Gofffan> Hey Sean.
2014-04-05 14:56:28 : <sean> hey
2014-04-05 14:56:35 : <Hippy> Hi, Gofffan
2014-04-05 14:56:43 : <Gofffan> Hippy!
bows
2014-04-05 14:57:02 : <Gofffan> :)
2014-04-05 14:57:03 : <fredskuentz> greetings gofffan
2014-04-05 14:57:09 : <Hippy> Jim, I couldn't've put that better
2014-04-05 14:57:10 : <Gofffan> Mr. Kuentz
2014-04-05 14:57:11 : <Jim> hi
2014-04-05 14:57:18 : <Gofffan> Hi
2014-04-05 14:57:55 : <Hippy> Who here is good at chemistry?
2014-04-05 14:59:04 : <Jim> me
2014-04-05 14:59:38 : <fredskuentz> knot eye
2014-04-05 14:59:45 : <Hippy> Excellent. Okay, if a creature breathes hydrogen and excretes methane, what else is it supplying to make the methane?
2014-04-05 15:00:09 : <fredskuentz> fart juice
2014-04-05 15:01:08 : <sean> carbon
2014-04-05 15:02:12 : <Hippy> That's what I thought. Now, on 'Cosmos' (the new one) the host was saying that a creature on Titan might breathe hydrogen and excrete methane. So where does it get the carbon?
2014-04-05 15:02:31 : <Hippy> What sort of reaction is going on?
2014-04-05 15:02:41 : <fredskuentz> http://animals.howstuffworks.com/mammals/methane-cow1.htm
2014-04-05 15:02:54 : <fredskuentz> LOL
2014-04-05 15:03:09 : <fredskuentz> the host on Cosmos is stuffed completely full of wild blueberry muffins
2014-04-05 15:03:29 : <fredskuentz> unless there's free floating ryegrass
2014-04-05 15:03:45 : <Jim> Normally methane is produced: CO2 + 2H2O => CH4 + 2O2
2014-04-05 15:05:12 : <Gofffan> http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_products_in_this_chemical_reactio...
2014-04-05 15:05:20 : <Hippy> Hmm. Not likely to have free CO2 on Titan, I would've thought
2014-04-05 15:06:25 : <Hippy> Okay, let's say the animals gets free H2 from the atmosphere. Now what happens?
2014-04-05 15:06:40 : <Jim> Using the above formula that I quoted, it requires energy to make methane.
AFK for ethanol and water mix
2014-04-05 15:07:05 : <fredskuentz> all of which could be easily solved if Pluto was a planet
2014-04-05 15:07:16 : <Jim> lol
2014-04-05 15:07:21 : <fredskuentz> so Tyson is literally hoist on his own petard!
2014-04-05 15:08:26 : "Larry" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 15:08:34 : <sean> Hiya Larry
2014-04-05 15:08:38 : <Jim> It generally takes energy to make methane, so I do not know what Tyson is talking about.
2014-04-05 15:08:42 : <Jim> Larry!
2014-04-05 15:08:47 : <fredskuentz> Good afternoon Larry!
2014-04-05 15:08:48 : <Larry> Hello all.
2014-04-05 15:08:49 : <Gofffan> Hi Larry!
2014-04-05 15:09:11 : <Larry> Tysin?
2014-04-05 15:09:19 : <fredskuentz> deGrasse Tyson
2014-04-05 15:09:35 : <Larry> Yeah, I guessed that would be the man.
2014-04-05 15:09:42 : <fredskuentz> claims creatures on Titan could breath oxygen and fart methane
2014-04-05 15:09:48 : <Dan> Break time again! I've successfully routed all the power & ground wites for two pairs of fog lights and a car camera through my home-made crossbar to mount to the van's roof rack bard!
2014-04-05 15:09:55 : <fredskuentz> we were trying to figure out what happens inbetween
2014-04-05 15:10:00 : <Dan> wites = wires.
2014-04-05 15:10:21 : <Dan> bard=bar
2014-04-05 15:10:35 : <Dan> My hands hurt! LOL!
2014-04-05 15:10:40 : <fredskuentz> hee hee
2014-04-05 15:10:46 : <fredskuentz> forward or rear camera?
2014-04-05 15:11:42 : <fredskuentz> okay, here's Tyson showing the math:
2014-04-05 15:11:44 : <fredskuentz> http://www.whymarymatters.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Sydney-Harris1.jpg
2014-04-05 15:11:45 : <Dan> This one is forward, and IR-capable. I have a rear cam already mounted in a licenseplate frame, but I've yet to run those wires through the van body.
2014-04-05 15:12:36 : <Jim> C + 2H2 + energy => CH4 this is losing proposition for an organism
2014-04-05 15:13:25 : <fredskuentz> maybe they light the farts and live off the warmth
2014-04-05 15:13:44 : <Larry> Thanks Fred. Still funny.
2014-04-05 15:13:52 : <Jim> 2nd law of thermodynamics
2014-04-05 15:14:21 : <fredskuentz> :)
2014-04-05 15:14:22 : <Hippy> Okay, so I'm not crazy and my high school science pays off.
2014-04-05 15:14:41 : <fredskuentz> Hippy, the second doesn't necessarily prove the first
2014-04-05 15:14:42 : <Hippy> Hi, Larry. Now that you're here I can ask what the source of 'The Noneusch' was
2014-04-05 15:15:13 : <Hippy> Well put, Fred. I'm glad you'll be in my corner at the hearing...
2014-04-05 15:15:18 : <fredskuentz> hee hee
2014-04-05 15:15:38 : <Dan> I'll have one fog light left to wire to the back-up lights on the van, but I'm in no hurry to start that part of the project because I'll have to take the tailgate upholstery panels off to locate a good place to drill holes for the mount.
2014-04-05 15:15:44 : <Dan> https://www.facebook.com/dan.hollifield/media_set?set=a.1020320824254378...
2014-04-05 15:15:49 : <fredskuentz> anybody watching THE 100? My TV group is having the proverbial field day with their science
2014-04-05 15:15:50 : <Larry> Source of :the Nonesuch was hundreds of fairy tales + dozens of telepathy stories.

2014-04-05 15:16:42 : <fredskuentz> how on Earth do you know Sean O'Connor??
2014-04-05 15:16:51 : <Hippy> Ah, thanks, L:arry. I've alwasys thought there was a Georgette Heyer story called it and that had you based it on hers, but I could never track down hers.
2014-04-05 15:17:19 : <Gofffan> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nonesuch
2014-04-05 15:17:37 : <Hippy> God, what a poor sentence I just writted.
2014-04-05 15:17:58 : <Gofffan> That's wroted
2014-04-05 15:18:24 : <sean> heh
2014-04-05 15:18:39 : <Hippy> No, hang on: 'wroten'. Yes, if I carry the participle forward...
2014-04-05 15:18:46 : <Larry> I'd forgotten. Yes, there was a story by Heyer. She used a Regency term for an "Ultimate" sort of fashionable guy.
2014-04-05 15:19:18 : <Larry> Maybe not a story title. Just the concept.
2014-04-05 15:19:32 : <Dan> "I can only read writin' when it's been prperly writ..." -- Popeye, 1940s-era.
2014-04-05 15:19:57 : <Hippy> Ah, good. It does all come together neatly. That's the advantage of having the author right here.
2014-04-05 15:20:26 : <Hippy> Poor Popeye woudl be dead in the SMS age
2014-04-05 15:21:31 : <sean> he would definitely have a hard time with it.
2014-04-05 15:21:34 : <Gofffan> Spinach all over his Galaxy s4
2014-04-05 15:21:45 : <fredskuentz> BTW, it's a free HBO/Cinemax weekend on many cable systems
2014-04-05 15:21:56 : <fredskuentz> or as I've dubbed it, "Crapfest '14"
2014-04-05 15:22:14 : <Jim> All the nudity disappears weekend.
2014-04-05 15:22:24 : <Hippy> You got that right. Watch a weekend of that and I'll be back using the old Victrola
2014-04-05 15:22:25 : <fredskuentz> I'm still twitching from DARK SHADOWS as I gear up for MAN OF STEEL
2014-04-05 15:23:09 : <Jim> Lost Girl finishes up Season 4 this Monday on Siffy.
2014-04-05 15:23:13 : <Dan> We've got our BritComs on PBS tonight, but I'll alrt my wife in case she wants to look up the listings in search of something she wouldn't think was garbage. Thanks, Fred!
2014-04-05 15:23:21 : <fredskuentz> sure
2014-04-05 15:23:35 : <fredskuentz> Game of Thrones all weekend, I think that has nekkid nudity
2014-04-05 15:23:36 : <Larry> I'll watch MAN OF STEEL if it's free. Otherwise--it's got a bad reputation.
2014-04-05 15:24:03 : <Larry> DARK SHADOWS was very poor.
2014-04-05 15:24:05 : <fredskuentz> oh, and BATTLESHIP
2014-04-05 15:24:09 : <fredskuentz> yes
2014-04-05 15:24:12 : <sean> I tend to agree with Fred. the best one was 78 and they have all been worse since
2014-04-05 15:24:18 : <fredskuentz> I was amazed at how poor DARK SHADOWS was
2014-04-05 15:24:19 : <Jim> South Park ruined GOT for me.
2014-04-05 15:25:23 : <fredskuentz> Larry, MAN OF STEEL is on at 6 and 9 tonight
2014-04-05 15:25:39 : <fredskuentz> and several other more times as well :)
2014-04-05 15:25:46 : <fredskuentz> no WOMAN OF KLEENEX though
2014-04-05 15:26:04 : <Larry> My wife Marilyn's knee infection came back. She's in a Care Center with no knee.
2014-04-05 15:26:11 : <fredskuentz> oh no
2014-04-05 15:26:28 : <Gofffan> Sorry Larry
2014-04-05 15:26:58 : <Hippy> Oh, no... Sorry, Larry. That is so sad...
2014-04-05 15:27:00 : <fredskuentz> my best friend's mom fell and broke her hip (she's 92) a week ago friday, and they had a new hip in and her doing physical therapy by that sunday
2014-04-05 15:27:24 : <fredskuentz> the surgeon said he'd have done it sooner but he didn't like the Saturday surgical crew
2014-04-05 15:27:28 : <fredskuentz> I was flabbergasted
2014-04-05 15:27:31 : <Larry> We're looking at 6-8 weeks of not using the leg at all. They're teaching her to hop.
2014-04-05 15:27:39 : <fredskuentz> um
2014-04-05 15:27:40 : <fredskuentz> wow
2014-04-05 15:27:57 : <fredskuentz> but in theory full recovery?
2014-04-05 15:28:16 : <Jim> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanogen
2014-04-05 15:28:28 : <Larry> Fred, your best friend's mom had much luck and good doctors.
2014-04-05 15:28:42 : <fredskuentz> yeah
2014-04-05 15:28:53 : <Jim> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanogenesis
2014-04-05 15:28:58 : <fredskuentz> and, the doctor insisted she go to a care facility
2014-04-05 15:29:00 : <Larry> Marilyn gets full recovery iff lucky. She could lose the leg.
2014-04-05 15:29:14 : <fredskuentz> and not make her family do it at home
2014-04-05 15:29:16 : <fredskuentz> oh no
2014-04-05 15:29:22 : <Hippy> Good God...
2014-04-05 15:29:43 : <fredskuentz> does she have some sort of recurring knee infection? or a causal injury?
2014-04-05 15:30:26 : <Larry> recurring. we thought/hoped we'd fixed it these past six months.
2014-04-05 15:30:40 : <fredskuentz> yes
2014-04-05 15:30:50 : <fredskuentz> how close are you to the facility?
2014-04-05 15:32:04 : <Larry> I'm about half an hour away. It's Northridge Care Center.
2014-04-05 15:32:39 : <fredskuentz> How are you holding up? Are you at home alone?
2014-04-05 15:33:53 : <Larry> Home alone and holding up pretty well.
2014-04-05 15:34:08 : <fredskuentz> Good on the second part
2014-04-05 15:34:18 : <Jim> yes
2014-04-05 15:34:25 : <fredskuentz> I know Mom's house was pretty lonely when she was gone
2014-04-05 15:34:31 : <Hippy> I agree
2014-04-05 15:34:44 : <sean> yep
2014-04-05 15:34:58 : <fredskuentz> If we weren't scattered across the globe, we'd bring you casseroles :)
2014-04-05 15:35:10 : <sean> most definitely
2014-04-05 15:35:28 : <Hippy> And some nice red to go with them
2014-04-05 15:35:32 : <Jim> pepperoni rolls
2014-04-05 15:35:37 : <fredskuentz> Irish coffee
2014-04-05 15:35:49 : <Gofffan> Cronuts
2014-04-05 15:36:07 : <Hippy> So atl least you'll be fed, Lary
2014-04-05 15:36:09 : <Larry> I'll have to cook for myself or go out. but I made Irish coffee for St Paddy's Day.
2014-04-05 15:36:15 : <fredskuentz> individual strata of bread and meat and cheese and some kind of a leaf
2014-04-05 15:36:28 : <Jim> pepperoni rolls => pastries for diabetics
2014-04-05 15:36:47 : <fredskuentz> as a brand new diabetic, jim, I'd like to hear about that
2014-04-05 15:36:48 : <Larry> yeah, I can get fed.
2014-04-05 15:36:53 : <fredskuentz> good
2014-04-05 15:37:44 : <Larry> My relatives bought her an I-pad. She's got entertainment. But she can't go to the commode without help.
2014-04-05 15:38:16 : <Hippy> I've been there
2014-04-05 15:38:27 : <Jim> Apparently only available in West Virginia:
2014-04-05 15:38:30 : <Jim> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepperoni_roll
2014-04-05 15:38:31 : <fredskuentz> I stayed with mom in her care facility and a friend brought me an iPad
2014-04-05 15:38:34 : <fredskuentz> sanity saver
2014-04-05 15:39:11 : <fredskuentz> Jim, it's got bread in it?
2014-04-05 15:39:14 : <fredskuentz> I can't have bread
2014-04-05 15:39:15 : <fredskuentz> :(
2014-04-05 15:39:18 : <Dan> Me too, but the hospital gave me crutches to use to get around. I did want a few ropes hanging from the ceiling in strategic locations in the house to help me get out of bed or a chair, though.
2014-04-05 15:40:17 : <Jim> Yes, but some bread should be OK. If you are forgoing bread entirely, then a pepperoni roll is not for you.
2014-04-05 15:40:37 : <Larry> Over the years we've collected a lot of crutches, sticks, and walkers.
2014-04-05 15:40:58 : <fredskuentz> I'm forgoing bread, and almost all carbs
2014-04-05 15:41:10 : <Dan> That one price of living an "eventful" life, Larry. :)
2014-04-05 15:41:15 : <Hippy> That's pretty full on, Fred
2014-04-05 15:41:18 : <fredskuentz> Larry, yeah, I have a huge collection of handicapped supplies inherited from my parents
2014-04-05 15:41:36 : <fredskuentz> Hippy, they've got me on 3 diets for different ailments
2014-04-05 15:41:49 : <fredskuentz> the overlap is pretty much 'water' and 'some cheese'
2014-04-05 15:41:56 : <Hippy> Egad. Roll on the nanotech!
2014-04-05 15:42:03 : <fredskuentz> yes
2014-04-05 15:42:14 : <fredskuentz> I think wistfully of Larry's autodocs every day
2014-04-05 15:42:34 : <fredskuentz> I drink a lot of Atkin's shakes
2014-04-05 15:42:49 : <Jim> Gas stations around here sell plastic cartons with cheese and pepperoni and peppers.
2014-04-05 15:43:03 : <fredskuentz> gas stations around here sell sushi
2014-04-05 15:43:06 : <fredskuentz> hence the term
2014-04-05 15:43:11 : <fredskuentz> 'gas station sushi'
2014-04-05 15:43:21 : "ronn" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 15:43:27 : <Jim> Ronn!
2014-04-05 15:43:28 : <fredskuentz> Hey ronn
2014-04-05 15:43:29 : <Dan> ronn!
2014-04-05 15:43:34 : <Gofffan> Hi Ronn
2014-04-05 15:43:58 : <ronn> Ahoy the chat!
2014-04-05 15:44:01 : <Hippy> Hi Ronn
2014-04-05 15:44:14 : <Larry> Medicine has gotten better over the decades. Youths, you would not like 1940s dentistry. My step-great-grandmother went blind from cataracts. I like the future; I'd have liked to get here still young.
2014-04-05 15:44:15 : <sean> hey ronn
2014-04-05 15:44:56 : <fredskuentz> my bff says that they'll invent practical immortality, but it won't turn back the clock
2014-04-05 15:45:12 : <fredskuentz> so we'll be on the porch of the old folks home in our rocking chairs forever
2014-04-05 15:45:14 : <Jim> Did the NAZI's really use stainless steel fillings?
2014-04-05 15:45:17 : <ronn> Running late -- visiting with neighbors. What have I missed?
2014-04-05 15:45:18 : <fredskuentz> watching the young folk
2014-04-05 15:45:21 : <Dan> I don't care about "young," I just want to keep on getting to the future! Farm-Boy will find a way to deal with whatever happens.
2014-04-05 15:45:30 : "dmac" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 15:45:38 : <dmac> Hi guys.
2014-04-05 15:45:43 : <Dan> Hiya, dmac!
2014-04-05 15:45:53 : <Hippy> Hi, dmac
2014-04-05 15:45:53 : <Gofffan> Hey dmac
2014-04-05 15:46:11 : <Larry> Welcome newcomers!
2014-04-05 15:46:37 : <dmac> Is there a topic today?
2014-04-05 15:47:13 : <ronn> Hi, Larry!
2014-04-05 15:47:15 : <fredskuentz> Jim, Google says 'yes' to 'nazi stainless steel filllings'
2014-04-05 15:47:22 : <fredskuentz> they had other uses for the other metals
2014-04-05 15:47:36 : <Dan> I'm slowly migrating from my mid-50s into my late-50s, and after all the crap I've put my body through, it still hasn't stopped working entirely. It has shifted to "reluctantly" most mornings, however. :)
2014-04-05 15:48:01 : <Jim> I turn 50 in 4 days.
2014-04-05 15:48:15 : <Gofffan> A baby.

2014-04-05 15:48:17 : <dmac> It doesn't get better Dan, the good news is we're still getting older.
2014-04-05 15:49:00 : <Larry> I'm weeks away from 76.
2014-04-05 15:49:30 : <Jim> William Shatnet is 83.
2014-04-05 15:49:33 : <fredskuentz> I just didi 60
2014-04-05 15:49:42 : <fredskuentz> my health insurance went up $300 a month
2014-04-05 15:49:42 : <Gofffan> I also
2014-04-05 15:49:43 : <fredskuentz> :\\
2014-04-05 15:49:59 : <dmac> I have an uncle who turned 100 last year. I hope I got those genes. :)
2014-04-05 15:50:10 : <Hippy> $300 a month?
flees the United States
2014-04-05 15:50:30 : <fredskuentz> Hippy, $300 a month more
2014-04-05 15:50:33 : <Dan> I'm rushing headlong to 57 in November. But the good news is that retirement is only 10 years away, LOL! Imagine my pension from the factory with 45 years senority! :)
2014-04-05 15:50:35 : <fredskuentz> up to $1200
2014-04-05 15:50:36 : <ronn> Of course, dentists here have used pre-formed stainless steel temporary crowns more recently, and in some cases the "temporary" is in name only . . .
2014-04-05 15:50:37 : <fredskuentz> a month
2014-04-05 15:51:02 : <fredskuentz> I've taken to telling people I'm retired
2014-04-05 15:51:06 : <fredskuentz> mostly to make them go away
2014-04-05 15:51:07 : <fredskuentz> :D
collapses. Fred's insurance is nearly half his pay!
2014-04-05 15:51:48 : <ronn> when the pension fund crashes and the pension goes away in 9.5 years . . .
2014-04-05 15:51:49 : <fredskuentz> guy stopped me at a gas station last week, tried to sell me his script about the very first xmas
2014-04-05 15:51:55 : <fredskuentz> "I'm retired"
2014-04-05 15:52:10 : <fredskuentz> hey, hippy, my insurance is $1200 a month more than my pay
2014-04-05 15:52:17 : <fredskuentz> "I'm retired" :D
2014-04-05 15:52:27 : <Hippy> LOL!
2014-04-05 15:52:45 : <Hippy> ..."but consider the tax advantages" as insurers used to say to me
2014-04-05 15:52:57 : <Dan> ronn!, 300-year old company that clears 19 billion a year? And we have a union. I'm in fair shape.
2014-04-05 15:53:16 : <Gofffan> Beretta?
2014-04-05 15:53:42 : <fredskuentz> keep your eye on the sparrow!
2014-04-05 15:53:51 : <ronn> Dan, just thinking about all the stories of that sort we hear frequently in the news these days. Hope yours makes it.
2014-04-05 15:54:03 : <Dan> Saint-Gobain. They made the mirrors and windows for Versalies (sp?).
2014-04-05 15:54:46 : <Gofffan> Nice heritage
2014-04-05 15:54:55 : <Jim> yes
2014-04-05 15:54:55 : <Gofffan> Versailles
2014-04-05 15:55:18 : <ronn> fred: not when the sparrow is flying overhead, or you may get poop in your eye . . .
2014-04-05 15:55:34 : <Dan> Got to step outdoors for a few. My step-son just phoned and asked if he could borrow my push-morew...
2014-04-05 15:55:35 : <sean> the small town 15 miles up the road from me or that cottage in france?
2014-04-05 15:55:42 : <Dan> Thanks, Goffan!
2014-04-05 15:55:53 : <Dan> mower
2014-04-05 15:56:05 : <Hippy> Either. SG is pretty widespread
2014-04-05 15:56:40 : <ronn> I have enough trouble following a power mower around the yard. I couldn't do it if I had to push any more(w) . . . .
2014-04-05 15:56:43 : <Hippy> Ooh, and I found a Brunswick in Georgia. This end of the world so resembles a Melbourne (AU) street directory
2014-04-05 15:57:01 : <Dan> Multi-national, multi-billion dollar corp. Specializing in building materials. I work in the fiberglass insulation division.
2014-04-05 15:57:20 : <ronn> So which one claims to be the origin of Brunswick stew?
2014-04-05 15:57:51 : <fredskuentz> non sequitur, but I'm dying to tell you guys
2014-04-05 15:57:55 : <fredskuentz> on THE 100
2014-04-05 15:58:05 : <fredskuentz> space station, probably 200 mile orbit
2014-04-05 15:58:09 : <Hippy> The main thing is, Larry, that we wish Marilyn all the best and hope she gets well soon
2014-04-05 15:58:10 : <fredskuentz> they're running out of air
2014-04-05 15:58:18 : <fredskuentz> what hippy said!
The 100!
2014-04-05 15:58:29 : <fredskuentz> so they're getting rid of people by 'floating' them
2014-04-05 15:58:47 : <fredskuentz> which involves putting them in a huge airlock
2014-04-05 15:58:54 : <fredskuentz> probably a 25' cube
2014-04-05 15:58:57 : <fredskuentz> and opening the door
2014-04-05 15:59:01 : <fredskuentz> WHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOSH
2014-04-05 15:59:12 : <Gofffan> Galaxy Quest
guffaws
2014-04-05 15:59:16 : <fredskuentz> which gives them enough of a boost that the bodies
2014-04-05 15:59:19 : <fredskuentz> I swear
2014-04-05 15:59:21 : <sean> so to fix running out of air, they are venting air to vacuum?
2014-04-05 15:59:24 : <fredskuentz> it's a quote
2014-04-05 15:59:32 : <fredskuentz> float all the way across the galaxy
2014-04-05 16:00:09 : <fredskuentz> sean, yes
2014-04-05 16:00:15 : <fredskuentz> LOTS of air
2014-04-05 16:00:16 : <fredskuentz> and
2014-04-05 16:00:30 : <fredskuentz> dumping presumably irreplaceable biomass
2014-04-05 16:00:51 : <Hippy> Don't you wish you could write these things instead of the absolute HACKS they actuall have?
2014-04-05 16:00:59 : <ronn> Larry: Re: Hippy & Fred' comment -- Me, too. I guess I missed the news that she is ill.
2014-04-05 16:01:07 : <fredskuentz> I'd certainly like to rewrite, yes
2014-04-05 16:01:27 : <Jim> I could write a better story line.
2014-04-05 16:01:39 : <Hippy> If you can draw, Frd, we could do a comic, then that would instantly become a cable show
2014-04-05 16:01:51 : <dmac> Same here, hope she has a speedy recovery.
2014-04-05 16:01:56 : <Hippy> We could put Jim on as methane advisor
2014-04-05 16:02:08 : <ronn> Re: 100: I suppose they didn't want to go the soylent green route . . .
2014-04-05 16:02:15 : <fredskuentz> Hippy, I can draw, but I'm retired
2014-04-05 16:02:23 : <Jim> Yes, I hope that both Marilyn and here leg get better.
2014-04-05 16:02:30 : <Jim> her leg
2014-04-05 16:02:35 : <sean> well, the writer might have but then had it changed. I remember Larry talking about the 'contributions' of higher ups with Land of the Lost.
2014-04-05 16:02:38 : <Hippy> Well put, Fred!
2014-04-05 16:02:51 : <fredskuentz> sean, I went and read the book
2014-04-05 16:03:05 : <fredskuentz> the only difference is, in the book, they kill you first
2014-04-05 16:03:49 : <sean> i semi-retract my statement ;)
2014-04-05 16:04:35 : <sean> I have not read the book or watched the show i guess it is.
2014-04-05 16:04:42 : <fredskuentz> there are a lot of changes from the book to the show, but the amazing thing is
2014-04-05 16:04:48 : <fredskuentz> they're equally stupid
2014-04-05 16:05:03 : <Gofffan> I'll have to read that
2014-04-05 16:05:21 : <fredskuentz> I posted a synopsis
2014-04-05 16:05:29 : <Hippy> I didn't know it was a book, but it sound stupid enough to be KIndleworthy
2014-04-05 16:05:58 : <Larry> Thanks all for your good wishes. (Belated. Sorry, I was dozing.)
2014-04-05 16:06:03 : <Hippy> 9 days until 'Shipstar', if you can trust Amazon
2014-04-05 16:06:15 : <fredskuentz> check this from the top of the page
2014-04-05 16:06:16 : <fredskuentz> https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/rec.arts.tv/RWinAqZHmKc/rKl8SXuTB8sJ
2014-04-05 16:06:40 : <Dan> OK, sone and lawnmower sent off to make themselves useful, LOL!
2014-04-05 16:06:43 : <Dan> son
2014-04-05 16:07:44 : <Larry> I have my copies of SHIPSTAR. We commissioned illustrations from Don Davis, and they got in. One should have been a cover.
2014-04-05 16:08:26 : <Hippy> I like 'thebluemimie2's signature line
2014-04-05 16:10:09 : <Hippy> I hope they are in the Kindle® edition
2014-04-05 16:10:34 : <fredskuentz> you can buy kindle
2014-04-05 16:10:43 : <fredskuentz> or read the first couple chapters free
2014-04-05 16:11:00 : <Larry> I like ALL of the back cover quotes.
2014-04-05 16:11:23 : <Hippy> I pre-ordered it, as I was champing at my champables once I finished 'Bowl of Heaven'
2014-04-05 16:12:11 : <fredskuentz> Hey, Syfy is changing their schedule and getting rid of series and doing more event driven mini series
2014-04-05 16:12:16 : <Dan> OK, I'm burning daylight. I've reached the point where I need to go outside and start running wires through the car body. I'm going to switch to logging the chat so I can catch up when local time is post-dusk. See you later, folks! Larry, best wishes for Marlyn & yourself!
2014-04-05 16:12:23 : <fredskuentz> we're hoping they notice they've got Ringworld sitting there
2014-04-05 16:12:25 : <sean> speaking of back cover quotes, I read a book the other day that had a quote from you, Larry. I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Martian' and highly recommend it.
2014-04-05 16:12:31 : <fredskuentz> Night Dan
2014-04-05 16:12:34 : <fredskuentz> enjoy!
Dan_AFK
2014-04-05 16:13:03 : <dmac> Hippy, the Kindle edition is being released here on April 8th.
2014-04-05 16:13:51 : <fredskuentz> you can watch eps on cw.com
2014-04-05 16:13:57 : <Hippy> 8th? Even better! They must've moved it forward
is in Orlando at the moment, too
2014-04-05 16:14:22 : <dmac> So you're here not there?
2014-04-05 16:14:44 : <Hippy> Yep
2014-04-05 16:14:57 : <Hippy> Not neither here nor there :)
2014-04-05 16:15:10 : <dmac> otherwhere. :)
2014-04-05 16:16:24 : <dmac> I haven't watched the syfy channel for a few years. Anything good there these days?
2014-04-05 16:16:54 : <Jim> Lost Girl is ending Season 4 Monday
2014-04-05 16:17:10 : <dmac> recommended?
2014-04-05 16:17:17 : <Jim> Yes
2014-04-05 16:17:26 : <dmac> Okay, thanks.
2014-04-05 16:17:43 : <Jim> However, you are going to want to watch the entire season first.
2014-04-05 16:18:14 : <dmac> Yeah, I figured there'd be some catch up.
2014-04-05 16:18:39 : <Hippy> I wonder what the fallout from 'Noah' will be? More Old Testament tales told as comics, and an entire alternate Bible built up around them?
2014-04-05 16:18:46 : <sean> anybody watching orphan black?
2014-04-05 16:18:56 : <Gofffan> yes!
2014-04-05 16:19:12 : <sean> interesting concept
2014-04-05 16:19:39 : <Gofffan> Excellent series - challenging to shoot as well.
2014-04-05 16:19:58 : <sean> I have watched the first ep and was intrigued. havent had a chance to watch anymore yet.
2014-04-05 16:20:15 : <fredskuentz> Noah is making some money, but not enough
2014-04-05 16:20:20 : <fredskuentz> it's neither a flop nor a hit
2014-04-05 16:20:29 : <Gofffan> watch it through so you're ready for this season.
2014-04-05 16:20:30 : <fredskuentz> I'd say it won't have much effect at all
hopes not
2014-04-05 16:20:46 : <Larry> Yeah, The Martian is good procedural SF.
2014-04-05 16:21:08 : <Hippy> I shall hunt it out
2014-04-05 16:21:35 : <sean> for a first novel, i thought the guy did a good job.
2014-04-05 16:21:56 : <sean> but i enjoy the geeky details. ;)
2014-04-05 16:21:59 : <Jim> Continuum is back for another season on Syfy
2014-04-05 16:22:15 : <fredskuentz> I watch the Canadian feed of Continuum
2014-04-05 16:22:22 : <Gofffan> Anybody read Ready Player One?
2014-04-05 16:22:23 : <fredskuentz> so I'm about a month ahead
2014-04-05 16:23:18 : <sean> looks interesting
2014-04-05 16:23:24 : <sean> ready player one that is

2014-04-05 16:24:10 : <Gofffan> I'm ordering The Martian now.
2014-04-05 16:24:15 : <sean> reading The Mote in God's Eye.... AGAIN
2014-04-05 16:24:16 : <Hippy> It sounds familiar to me, but from where?
2014-04-05 16:24:25 : "growler" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 16:24:33 : <sean> hi Euan
2014-04-05 16:24:36 : <Hippy> Holy crap!
2014-04-05 16:24:42 : <Hippy> Hi Euan
2014-04-05 16:24:50 : <growler> Hi. Got a few minutes before golf.
2014-04-05 16:24:55 : <Gofffan> Hello
2014-04-05 16:24:56 : <Larry> I haven't finished, but recommend anyway, NEPTUNE'S BROOD.
2014-04-05 16:25:14 : <Hippy> Okay, that's on the list, too
2014-04-05 16:25:40 : <Gofffan> Same here. List growing.
2014-04-05 16:25:43 : <fredskuentz> Nessus is on Facebook, I just invited her in
2014-04-05 16:25:46 : <growler> Girlfriends cat is eatng my breakfeast.
2014-04-05 16:26:09 : <Hippy> How can a cat eat Steinlager ?
2014-04-05 16:26:18 : <sean> neptunes brood is at the library, I have picked it up and looked at it several times but have not checked it out yet.
2014-04-05 16:26:35 : <growler> Shock and horror - this Anzac doesn't drink beer.
2014-04-05 16:27:02 : "xihr" left the channel.
2014-04-05 16:27:11 : <sean> be nice to chat to nesssus.
is shocked and horrified and wants to hit the fridge
2014-04-05 16:27:15 : <Larry> Neptune's Brood is economics fiction. Interstellar economy worked up out of whole cloth.
2014-04-05 16:27:27 : <growler> You know how the first time you try it, it tastes like piss? But you develop a pallete for it? I never did.
2014-04-05 16:27:41 : <Hippy> Now you've got me fascinated, Larry
2014-04-05 16:27:47 : <fredskuentz> no beer for me either. or alcohol. ever again.
2014-04-05 16:28:07 : <Hippy> Well, that's Steinlager for you :)
has a can of Fosters on the desk here
2014-04-05 16:28:20 : <Larry> sorry, Fred.
2014-04-05 16:28:26 : <Jim> Larry, like Bitcoin?
2014-04-05 16:28:42 : <Hippy> Sorry, too, Fred
2014-04-05 16:28:45 : <growler> My favourite is Pernod and fresh orange juice, because I love aniseed.
2014-04-05 16:28:59 : <fredskuentz> It's okay. I was usually the designated driver anyway.
2014-04-05 16:29:09 : <Hippy> You should hit the absinthe, Euan
2014-04-05 16:29:17 : <Larry> I'm not knowledgeable re Bitcoin.
2014-04-05 16:29:22 : <fredskuentz> Now that I live alone, drinking is probably not a habit I need to cultivate.
2014-04-05 16:29:38 : <growler> When Bitcoin started I installed a miner on my application server, but it never madem uch sense to me and I got a littlev annoyed by the rogue service, so quickly threw it away. Really regretted that when it hit $1000 a coin.
2014-04-05 16:30:32 : <Hippy> I really have to look into Bitcoin. The IRS has now determined it's assesable for capital gains - and so shall all revenue services follow
2014-04-05 16:31:04 : <Gofffan> Is Neptune's Blood a little Asimov-ian? Like Foundation but based on an economic premise?
2014-04-05 16:31:14 : <growler> Never tried absinthe, probably ought to. Though right now I seem to have an inner ear infection and get dizzy when I move quickly. Feels a little lilke an awful hangover - puts me off the thought of booze at all right now.
2014-04-05 16:31:25 : <Jim> Moderate drinking is OK for diabetics; I drink one or two Yinglings a day.
2014-04-05 16:31:29 : <Hippy> Some of the pundits are tipping $US100 000 a coin in a few years, but how that works I don't know
2014-04-05 16:32:03 : <Jim> , at the most.
2014-04-05 16:32:16 : <growler> I find it hard to beleive Bitcoin will stick - it seems a bit faddish. But a lot of people are investing in services around it, so who knows.
2014-04-05 16:32:34 : <fredskuentz> It's new to me Jim, and we're still fiddling with medication dosages
2014-04-05 16:32:35 : "xihr" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 16:32:42 : <fredskuentz> so the diets are fairly absolute
2014-04-05 16:32:49 : <Hippy> Welcome back, Xihr
2014-04-05 16:32:54 : <growler> As long as no sdignificant flaw is found in the design. The world ought experiment with non-state currencies. The competition will be good for them.
2014-04-05 16:33:03 : <fredskuentz> unfortunately I'm also on a 'don't get gout' diet
2014-04-05 16:33:14 : <fredskuentz> which is almost the opposite of a diabetic diet
2014-04-05 16:33:17 : <dmac> Now if you could back Bitcoin with knowledge that would it make it worth something.
2014-04-05 16:33:45 : <sean> my no gout attack diet is just be careful with pork chops, spinach and asparagus.
2014-04-05 16:33:48 : <Jim> That leaves Fred eating salad.
2014-04-05 16:34:00 : <fredskuentz> asparagus is ON my diet
2014-04-05 16:34:03 : <fredskuentz> but
2014-04-05 16:34:06 : <Gofffan> do you use Allopurinol?
2014-04-05 16:34:07 : <fredskuentz> I *hate* asparagus
2014-04-05 16:34:08 : <sean> not on mine
2014-04-05 16:34:19 : <fredskuentz> Goff, I have a bottle here, haven't cracked it yet
2014-04-05 16:34:27 : <fredskuentz> it makes my BFF sick as hell
2014-04-05 16:34:30 : <fredskuentz> so it scares me
2014-04-05 16:34:32 : <sean> what is allopurinol?
2014-04-05 16:34:33 : <Gofffan> the drug of choice
2014-04-05 16:34:43 : <Gofffan> for Gout
AFK briefly to teach his pancreas who's boss
2014-04-05 16:34:55 : <growler> So, yay for Bicep2. Couple of Nobel prizes in that I think.
2014-04-05 16:34:56 : <sean> ah. i control via diet.
2014-04-05 16:35:14 : <Gofffan> best way
2014-04-05 16:35:21 : <Jim> yes
2014-04-05 16:35:30 : <dmac> Otherwise it's similar to the dollar or any currency. It's only worth what people think its worth.
2014-04-05 16:35:42 : <sean> tho given the choice I would eat a lot more pork than I do.
2014-04-05 16:36:21 : <fredskuentz> I got a gout app for the ipad
2014-04-05 16:36:30 : <fredskuentz> it says aspargus is low purine
2014-04-05 16:36:35 : <Gofffan> There IS an app for everything!
2014-04-05 16:36:36 : <fredskuentz> 24mg purine
2014-04-05 16:36:42 : <fredskuentz> 57 urich acid
2014-04-05 16:36:51 : <sean> it may say that but it is one of my triggers. everyone is different.
2014-04-05 16:36:57 : <fredskuentz> ah
2014-04-05 16:37:02 : <fredskuentz> I don't have triggers
2014-04-05 16:37:07 : <growler> I had a blood test for gout recently - been getting inflamations of joints that fit the diagnosis. Whatever it is they measure Urea content of blood in above 0.34 suggest Gout, I have 0.5. So, gout I think.
2014-04-05 16:37:13 : <fredskuentz> it just showed up in my blood test in my physical
2014-04-05 16:37:24 : <fredskuentz> never had an attack
2014-04-05 16:37:33 : <sean> fred, you dont want an attack
2014-04-05 16:37:40 : <fredskuentz> so the doctor says
2014-04-05 16:37:49 : <fredskuentz> but my bff says the attacks are better than the meds
2014-04-05 16:37:51 : <fredskuentz> :(
2014-04-05 16:37:58 : <Jim> :-(
2014-04-05 16:38:00 : <Gofffan> so only potential - good time to do the right diet
2014-04-05 16:38:10 : <fredskuentz> right
2014-04-05 16:38:15 : <fredskuentz> hence the strick
2014-04-05 16:38:18 : <fredskuentz> strict
2014-04-05 16:38:38 : <growler> Comes of having the same diet from your youth, but the physical exercise of someone aging. Started happening to me when I had to stop playing football. I still eat like I'm feeding a protein consuming sport player. But my daily routine, not so much anymore.
2014-04-05 16:38:42 : <sean> i dont know, my first gout attack had me unable to walk and after getting my ankle caught in the sheets, screaming like a little girl.
2014-04-05 16:38:45 : <fredskuentz> unfortunately my top food, lox, is the second worse thing you can eat
2014-04-05 16:38:58 : <sean> most painful thing ever
2014-04-05 16:39:04 : <fredskuentz> sean, yes, but he gets an attack every year or two
2014-04-05 16:39:11 : <fredskuentz> and the meds make him sick every day
2014-04-05 16:39:16 : <fredskuentz> he finally tossed the meds
2014-04-05 16:39:47 : <Hippy> I'll see your gout and raise you a kidney stone
2014-04-05 16:39:57 : <fredskuentz> I have a HUGE kidney stone
2014-04-05 16:40:01 : <fredskuentz> had it for decades
2014-04-05 16:40:04 : <growler> Keep up the water intake - help your body push through the fluids and flush out the crap
2014-04-05 16:40:11 : <fredskuentz> hoping it will stay right where it is the rest of my life
2014-04-05 16:40:21 : <Hippy> This is an ageing channel, isn't it? All our illnesses that we love to discuss
2014-04-05 16:40:35 : <fredskuentz> hee hee
2014-04-05 16:40:40 : <fredskuentz> hey, you know what?
2014-04-05 16:40:52 : <Jim> National Lampoon had a cartoon of a man holding a rock about 4 inches in diameter and telling his doctor that he passed it in his urine.
2014-04-05 16:40:52 : <fredskuentz> my kidney stone ... didn't show up on my physical
2014-04-05 16:40:53 : <sean> i thought it was sci-fi talk but i guess if someone brings up an autodoc again it will all work out
2014-04-05 16:40:54 : <Hippy> What?
2014-04-05 16:40:56 : <fredskuentz> I forgot all about it
2014-04-05 16:41:08 : <Larry> I've had gout in my toe and a kidney stone too, once each. But the cure was worse than the disease. I'm deathly allergic to Advil.
2014-04-05 16:41:12 : <growler> Well, this decrepit has to go and play a round of Golf (stupid game, why oh why did I ever start keeping a handicap?). Ciao folks.
2014-04-05 16:41:24 : "growler" left the channel.
2014-04-05 16:41:26 : <sean> later euan
2014-04-05 16:41:28 : <Jim> bye
2014-04-05 16:41:29 : <Gofffan> I said to my doctor, It hurts when I go like this. So he said, Don't go like that.
2014-04-05 16:41:32 : <fredskuentz> advil? really?
2014-04-05 16:41:41 : <fredskuentz> isn't that just an over the counter pain killer?
2014-04-05 16:41:47 : <sean> yep
2014-04-05 16:41:52 : <Gofffan> Advil is great but hard on the kidneys
2014-04-05 16:42:05 : <fredskuentz> huh
2014-04-05 16:42:08 : <Jim> I live on Alleve.
2014-04-05 16:42:35 : <dmac> Goffan, my doctor actually said that to me too. He was serious.
2014-04-05 16:42:46 : <Hippy> My life is a sitcom. I"ve only had Advil once, and that was at theDMV
2014-04-05 16:42:53 : <Gofffan> :o
2014-04-05 16:42:55 : <fredskuentz> ?
2014-04-05 16:43:13 : <Larry> Advill => lost four pints of blood into an ulcer in my stomach. 911.
2014-04-05 16:43:25 : <fredskuentz> I didn't used to talk about this stuff at all, but a decade as a caregiver, you sort of run out of inhibitions
2014-04-05 16:43:28 : <fredskuentz> larry! ack!
2014-04-05 16:43:29 : <Jim> ouch
2014-04-05 16:43:36 : <Hippy> A crippling headache brought on by a bureaucracy so inefficient it could stall gravity if it put its mind to it
2014-04-05 16:43:53 : <Gofffan> Coming soon to an Imax near you
2014-04-05 16:44:04 : <fredskuentz> were you swallowing a bottle a day for weeks?
2014-04-05 16:44:05 : <Hippy> Bloody hell, Larry!
2014-04-05 16:44:12 : <fredskuentz> or did like the first pill do that to you?
2014-04-05 16:44:19 : <fredskuentz> likely somewhere inbetween
2014-04-05 16:45:03 : <Larry> I was taking half the recommended dose. Two doctors concurred.
2014-04-05 16:45:26 : <fredskuentz> wow
2014-04-05 16:45:29 : <Gofffan> 4 pints of blood is a massive amount. That's terrible.
Aches and pains
2014-04-05 16:45:46 : <fredskuentz> isn't that like half your blood volume?
2014-04-05 16:45:52 : <Hippy> Yep
2014-04-05 16:46:11 : <Hippy> Except for me, whose volume is metric :)
2014-04-05 16:46:16 : <Larry> We could change the topic. We really could. I could tell you that tree snakes can fly.
2014-04-05 16:46:18 : <fredskuentz> hah
2014-04-05 16:46:33 : <Gofffan> how is that?
Tree snakes can fly?
2014-04-05 16:46:57 : <Jim> Fly or controlled falling?
2014-04-05 16:47:05 : <sean> the alaspinian minidrag can fly. ;)
2014-04-05 16:47:10 : <fredskuentz> in a way it's somewhat relieving to find out all your friends have already been through "whatever"
2014-04-05 16:47:11 : <dmac> glide, isn't it?
2014-04-05 16:47:17 : <fredskuentz> and you're not the pioneer you though
2014-04-05 16:47:19 : <fredskuentz> t
2014-04-05 16:47:46 : <Gofffan> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysopelea
2014-04-05 16:48:14 : <Larry> Some one emailed me a videotape. The snake leaps, then turns sideways. Its cross section is a Burnoulli (sp?) wing, but high drag.
2014-04-05 16:48:23 : <Hippy> 'Fly' to me implies the ability to rise and fall, as opposed to 'glide'
2014-04-05 16:48:42 : <sean> interesting
2014-04-05 16:48:47 : <fredskuentz> "It does not so much 'fly' as 'plummet'"
2014-04-05 16:48:48 : <Hippy> Yeah
2014-04-05 16:48:48 : <dmac> poetic license by the namers.
2014-04-05 16:48:49 : <Gofffan> It flattens out its stomach and uses that to guide its glide.
2014-04-05 16:48:52 : <Larry> sure, glide. and not far.
2014-04-05 16:49:12 : <Gofffan> It's a snake. It should fall like a rock.
2014-04-05 16:49:19 : <Hippy> If it can turn sideways, though, that's more of a flight than a glide
2014-04-05 16:49:46 : <Gofffan> from Wiki: The combination of sucking in its stomach and making a motion of lateral undulation in the air makes it possible for the snake to glide in the air, where it also manages to save energy compared to travel on the ground and dodge earth-bound predators
2014-04-05 16:49:57 : <fredskuentz> how many millennia of dropping out of trees like a rock and missing dinner does it take before you develop this technique?
2014-04-05 16:50:11 : <sean> couple
2014-04-05 16:50:28 : <dmac> doesn't fly imply upward motion, where as glide implies controlled downward motion through the air.
2014-04-05 16:50:47 : <Hippy> That's a good way to definie it, dmac
2014-04-05 16:50:53 : <fredskuentz> but, no
2014-04-05 16:50:56 : <Hippy> Birds can move up, snakes can't
2014-04-05 16:50:57 : <fredskuentz> fly: "move or be hurled quickly through the air."
2014-04-05 16:51:15 : <fredskuentz> or
2014-04-05 16:51:18 : <fredskuentz> "move through the air under control."
2014-04-05 16:51:28 : <dmac> Okay.
2014-04-05 16:51:31 : <Hippy> However, I wonder how the snakes motions would go underwater? Is it behaviour derived from swimming?
2014-04-05 16:51:36 : <fredskuentz> only flying down is perfectly acceptable
2014-04-05 16:51:51 : <dmac> Seasnakes, Hippy?
2014-04-05 16:52:05 : <Hippy> Also, give it a high gravity world and a dense atmosphere and it might be able to flail its way to true flight - at say, Jinx's equator
2014-04-05 16:52:13 : <fredskuentz> water moccassins
2014-04-05 16:52:18 : <Hippy> Seasnakes, indeed
2014-04-05 16:52:23 : <Jim> Wiki says that they can glide better than a flying squirille
2014-04-05 16:52:26 : <Larry> My guess: generations of hurling self at prey. Flat stomach and curved back gave them flight.
2014-04-05 16:52:29 : <Hippy> Where are these tree snakes from?
2014-04-05 16:52:49 : <fredskuentz> and the flat stomach and curved back come from generations of missing prey
2014-04-05 16:52:50 : <dmac> Jim, maybe they hunt flying squirilles? :)
2014-04-05 16:52:51 : <Hippy> But what are they flying at, Larry?
2014-04-05 16:53:06 : <Gofffan> Their range is in Southeast Asia (the mainland, Greater and Lesser Sundas, Maluku, and the Philippines), southernmost China, India, and Sri Lanka.
2014-04-05 16:53:18 : <Gofffan> that was Wiki
2014-04-05 16:53:33 : <Jim> "Flying snakes are able to glide better than flying squirrels and other gliding animals, despite the lack of limbs, wings, or any other wing-like projections, gliding through the forest and jungle it inhabits with the distance being as great as 100 m."
2014-04-05 16:53:45 : <Hippy> Oh. So probably not evolved from Australian seasnakes
2014-04-05 16:53:50 : <Larry> In the vid I saw the target was another tree.
2014-04-05 16:54:08 : <fredskuentz> http://youtu.be/UczKUylZDv8
2014-04-05 16:54:20 : <fredskuentz> just the thumbnail still terrifies me
2014-04-05 16:54:21 : <Hippy> Are they even predators?
2014-04-05 16:54:43 : <fredskuentz> they're venomous
2014-04-05 16:54:51 : <fredskuentz> I would assume that means predator
2014-04-05 16:55:01 : <Hippy> If there are any aerodynamic engineers here we could work out the maximum size of the snake
2014-04-05 16:55:02 : <Jim> "Chrysopelea are diurnal, which means they hunt during the day. They prey upon lizards, frogs, birds and bats."
2014-04-05 16:55:03 : <fredskuentz> "I should waste my venom on a leaf eater?"
2014-04-05 16:55:41 : <Gofffan> Wiki said that they curve their bellies into a sort of Frisbee shape.
2014-04-05 16:55:42 : <Hippy> "Sting that mango" from the song of the same name :)
2014-04-05 16:56:33 : <Hippy> Okay, if they can glide 100m to prey on someting, how good is their eyesight? How are they detecting their prey?
admits these are silly questions given that the thing actually exists, but just for the gedanken of it all...
2014-04-05 16:57:39 : <fredskuentz> I'm not sure they actually fly to attack
2014-04-05 16:57:47 : <fredskuentz> as to just "get to the next tree"
2014-04-05 16:58:04 : <fredskuentz> the National Geo special implies that every damn thing in this forest flies
2014-04-05 16:58:18 : <Gofffan> Stay in the boat
semi quotes about topic drift. We were talking about the latest Niven book and ended up talking about the mating habits of the common marmoset. Now thats topic drift! ;)
2014-04-05 16:58:45 : <fredskuentz> watching them fly. holy crap.
2014-04-05 16:58:50 : <fredskuentz> hundreds of feet
2014-04-05 16:58:53 : <Gofffan> I just saw it too
2014-04-05 16:59:03 : <fredskuentz> I don't think they're flying hundreds of feet to land on a meal
2014-04-05 16:59:30 : <Gofffan> Maybe they only fly when cameras are present
2014-04-05 16:59:36 : <fredskuentz> hee hee
2014-04-05 16:59:56 : <Hippy> Now that's rapid evolution!
has realised again how he hates these cable documentaries. Bugger the facts, let's film the drama!
2014-04-05 17:01:14 : <sean> the edutainment as Fred puts it?
2014-04-05 17:01:24 : <dmac> Flying snake races?
2014-04-05 17:01:34 : <fredskuentz> hey, that's what THEY call it
2014-04-05 17:01:35 : <Gofffan> I don't have the sound on. Are they playing the William's Superman theme?
2014-04-05 17:01:36 : <fredskuentz> :)
2014-04-05 17:01:40 : <Jim> My muscle relaxant is starting to kick in. I will see everyone next month.
2014-04-05 17:01:43 : <Jim> bye
2014-04-05 17:01:47 : <fredskuentz> no, it's like xylaphone musc
2014-04-05 17:01:51 : <fredskuentz> night jim
2014-04-05 17:01:56 : <sean> later Jim
2014-04-05 17:01:56 : <Gofffan> Bye Jim
2014-04-05 17:01:56 : <dmac> bye Jim
2014-04-05 17:01:57 : "Jim" left the channel.
2014-04-05 17:02:49 : <fredskuentz> there's an hour long documentary here
2014-04-05 17:03:00 : <Gofffan> hah
2014-04-05 17:03:01 : <fredskuentz> "are alligators living under new york city"
2014-04-05 17:03:04 : <dmac> Take two to the top of the Empire State Building as see how far they go (and which one gets there first).
2014-04-05 17:03:05 : <fredskuentz> you know ...
2014-04-05 17:03:10 : <fredskuentz> it's sort of binary
2014-04-05 17:03:35 : <fredskuentz> it's like all those bigfoot hunters
2014-04-05 17:03:35 : <fredskuentz> NO
2014-04-05 17:03:40 : <fredskuentz> THEY DID NOT FIND BIGFOOT
2014-04-05 17:03:57 : <fredskuentz> nor does that guy have a chupacabra
2014-04-05 17:04:20 : <Gofffan> but there were mysterious sounds in the night ......
2014-04-05 17:04:28 : <sean> I just keep looking for more rocket city rednecks
2014-04-05 17:04:48 : <fredskuentz> okay, so the flying lizards
2014-04-05 17:04:48 : <Hippy> I saw a bit of the chupacabra one
2014-04-05 17:04:49 : <fredskuentz> are flying
2014-04-05 17:04:56 : <fredskuentz> to get away from the snakes
2014-04-05 17:05:08 : <fredskuentz> I hope to god that that's not how the snakes learned to fly
2014-04-05 17:05:48 : <fredskuentz> aaaaa
2014-04-05 17:05:49 : <fredskuentz> it is
2014-04-05 17:06:00 : <fredskuentz> the snake just launched itself after the lizard
2014-04-05 17:06:18 : <Gofffan> in the jungle, don't most tree dwellers travel tree to tree to stay off the dangerous ground?
2014-04-05 17:06:31 : <fredskuentz> that's the supposition here
2014-04-05 17:06:32 : <fredskuentz> yes
2014-04-05 17:06:33 : <sean> i had an iguana... in the wild, they avoid predators by leaping off a limb into the water and swimming away.
2014-04-05 17:06:51 : <Gofffan> cowards
2014-04-05 17:07:01 : <Hippy> So it is to move from one territory to another? That means the snake could do it very economically and avoid predators
2014-04-05 17:07:05 : <fredskuentz> brave iguana swam away
2014-04-05 17:07:11 : <fredskuentz> bravely swam away, away
2014-04-05 17:07:18 : <fredskuentz> when danger reared it's ugly head
2014-04-05 17:07:26 : <fredskuentz> brave iguana turned and fled
2014-04-05 17:07:32 : <sean> i know the song
2014-04-05 17:07:42 : <fredskuentz> :)
2014-04-05 17:08:08 : <dmac> So, instead of a small fish being pursued by a larger fish being pursued by a larger fish there's a flying lizard being pursued by a flying snake being pursued by an eagle.
2014-04-05 17:08:19 : <Hippy> I always thought the Visitors evolved from sea iguanas
2014-04-05 17:08:21 : <sean> iguana bravely turned and fled would be closer ;)
2014-04-05 17:09:19 : <sean> the whole premise of the visitors made no sense. if you can travel the stars, you can make water and food.
2014-04-05 17:09:24 : <Larry> I've been watching the flying snakes video.
2014-04-05 17:09:38 : <dmac> Sean re the Kzin.
2014-04-05 17:09:59 : <sean> ok, maybe for live food.
2014-04-05 17:10:15 : <fredskuentz> and don't forget they can breed with us
2014-04-05 17:10:23 : <Hippy> What the hell? Look at the flying lizard! It's about the size of a postage stamp!
2014-04-05 17:10:24 : <fredskuentz> without even taking off their human skinsuits
2014-04-05 17:10:48 : <dmac> Okay, so what about an alien race of intelligent flying snakes?
2014-04-05 17:11:01 : <fredskuentz> as long at they look like Jane Badler
2014-04-05 17:11:06 : <fredskuentz> or Laura Vandervoort
2014-04-05 17:11:08 : <fredskuentz> I'm good
2014-04-05 17:11:18 : <sean> yeah.. you are
2014-04-05 17:11:42 : <fredskuentz> http://www.mediapeta.com/peta/Images/Main/Sections/MediaCenter/lauraPETA...
2014-04-05 17:12:02 : <Hippy> That's chauvinist, though. There may be many reasons why they couldn't make water or food. One I thought of was that they are so territorial they can't eat or drink unless they steal it from another Visitor. Thus they missed the water around Saturn because nobody was there owning it. As to the food, they may need to hunt it.
2014-04-05 17:12:46 : <fredskuentz> is opening a cage and taking out a mouse and dropping it down your throat really hunting?
2014-04-05 17:13:12 : <dmac> Snack food.
2014-04-05 17:13:29 : <Hippy> Also, you're making assumptions about technology: why does space travel equal other advanced technology? Look at 'Like Banquo's Ghost'. The Alpha Centaurians got thei hperdrive by accident (I think) but not necessarily other advanced technologies.
2014-04-05 17:13:50 : <Hippy> Fred, it is if it was someone else's mouse
2014-04-05 17:13:57 : <fredskuentz> heh
2014-04-05 17:14:26 : <fredskuentz> I like how in WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, they invent really good close circuit TV for the space Ark
2014-04-05 17:14:33 : <fredskuentz> and nobody even mentions it
2014-04-05 17:14:50 : <ronn> Speaking of Frisbees: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/f283/
2014-04-05 17:15:11 : <fredskuentz> cool
2014-04-05 17:15:17 : <fredskuentz> and it's the real enterprise
2014-04-05 17:15:27 : <Hippy> Anyway, there is room for a lot of speculation about the Visitors
2014-04-05 17:15:27 : <fredskuentz> no bloody a, b, c, d, e, f, or jj
2014-04-05 17:15:28 : <sean> Hippy, you are implying that the visitors are like the footfall aliens. all knowledge comes from predecessors on stone blocks. if it is not there, they dont know it.
2014-04-05 17:15:50 : <fredskuentz> Hippy, you have read Larry's essay on the subject?
2014-04-05 17:16:02 : <Hippy> No I have not!
2014-04-05 17:16:05 : <fredskuentz> oh
2014-04-05 17:16:06 : <fredskuentz> heh
2014-04-05 17:16:09 : <Hippy> I didn't even know there was one!
2014-04-05 17:16:13 : <fredskuentz> he's covered a lot of this
2014-04-05 17:16:25 : <fredskuentz> I'm sure it's in one of those compilations?
2014-04-05 17:16:31 : <Hippy> What the? Why hasn't it been collected???
2014-04-05 17:16:55 : <Hippy> In reference to Visitors particularly?
2014-04-05 17:17:06 : <sean> its not in N-Space... the only one I have now
2014-04-05 17:17:28 : <sean> used to have playgrounds but have not replaced it since I lost my entire collection.
2014-04-05 17:17:31 : <fredskuentz> yeah, IIRC he tried to come up with assumptions for the visitors that actually made sense
2014-04-05 17:17:47 : <Hippy> No, Sean. They could develop their FTL drive and simply not have the technology to make their own food. Just as we have developed alternating current but not time travel
2014-04-05 17:18:13 : <fredskuentz> he asked why they passed up saturn, where the water comes prepackaged and nobody is shooting at you?
2014-04-05 17:18:18 : <Hippy> Well, he's right here, let's ask him!
2014-04-05 17:18:43 : <fredskuentz> he's mesmirized by the flying snakes
2014-04-05 17:18:46 : <Hippy> Larry, did you write an article speculating about Ken Johnson's Visitors from 'V'?
2014-04-05 17:19:06 : <Hippy> Oh, Fred, don't forget Jenny Neumann
2014-04-05 17:19:45 : <sean> ftl, implies advanced power sources... fusion. electricity. with that you can make food... not the same as a whole nother field of physics like time travel.
2014-04-05 17:20:08 : <fredskuentz> Jenny Neumann?
2014-04-05 17:20:23 : <Hippy> Lasers implies particle physics implies time travel.
2014-04-05 17:20:53 : <Hippy> One doesn't logically lead to the other and maybe their psychology is such that they don't see what we can see
2014-04-05 17:21:07 : <sean> no argument there.
2014-04-05 17:21:11 : <Hippy> She played Barbara in the original one
2014-04-05 17:21:28 : <fredskuentz> I have found a lot of hits mentioning that larry wrote about the visitors
2014-04-05 17:21:39 : <fredskuentz> but can't find where it was printed
2014-04-05 17:22:13 : <Hippy> I can remember only one reference, where he mentions that sex of 'V for Vsitors' was discusssed at a con, but I can't find the actual reference.
2014-04-05 17:22:30 : <sean> probably in the third compilation. not in n-space or playgrounds that I remember
2014-04-05 17:22:38 : <Hippy> Ie, he only reports it being discussed, but doesn't write about himself
2014-04-05 17:22:59 : <fredskuentz> others report about larry discussing it
2014-04-05 17:23:04 : <Hippy> Third one was 'Scatterbrain'
2014-04-05 17:23:21 : <sean> i have never read scatterbrain so that is probably where it is
2014-04-05 17:23:34 : <fredskuentz> we need lensman
2014-04-05 17:23:44 : <Hippy> I have, and I recall only a mention of it
2014-04-05 17:23:47 : <sean> dont ever say that. ;)
2014-04-05 17:23:52 : <fredskuentz> hee hee
2014-04-05 17:23:55 : <Hippy> We have Larry!
2014-04-05 17:24:10 : <sean> he is either going on a flying snake fest or dozing
2014-04-05 17:24:26 : <Hippy> Yeah
2014-04-05 17:24:54 : <sean> my dad is about the same age and dozing is the probable answer
2014-04-05 17:25:22 : <dmac> Just checked Scatterbrains, it didn't look like it was in there.
2014-04-05 17:25:33 : <Hippy> Those snakes really could evolve a wing as efficient as an eagle's - soaring on the thermals for their prey
2014-04-05 17:25:43 : <Hippy> Thanks, dmac
2014-04-05 17:25:47 : <fredskuentz> it might be in that one where he talks about the watcher in the woods
2014-04-05 17:25:52 : <fredskuentz> and the solarized bat
2014-04-05 17:26:02 : <sean> dont remember either of those
2014-04-05 17:26:05 : <fredskuentz> I think that's about various attempts to fix various projects
2014-04-05 17:26:13 : <Hippy> Don't remember the latter
2014-04-05 17:26:21 : <fredskuentz> it's the same story
2014-04-05 17:26:25 : <Hippy> Ah...now I do
2014-04-05 17:26:34 : <fredskuentz> the solarized bat was Disney's answer to fixing Watcher
2014-04-05 17:26:35 : <fredskuentz> :)
AFK for the consequences of aforementioned beer
2014-04-05 17:26:46 : <sean> me too
2014-04-05 17:27:05 : <Larry> jerry and I were hired to critiqu V. by the studio. We decided they evolved from sapient dinosaurs.
2014-04-05 17:27:15 : <fredskuentz> yay larry!
2014-04-05 17:27:49 : <fredskuentz> do you recall the name of that essay, or where it was printed?
2014-04-05 17:29:15 : <ronn> Speaking of flying snakes evolving wings: recall the scene in Andre Norton's _The Stars Are Ours_ . . .
2014-04-05 17:31:47 : <Hippy> I would have to look that up, ronn
2014-04-05 17:31:58 : <ronn> Those of course were armed with a venomous sting.
2014-04-05 17:33:33 : <dmac> and of course there were duoacorns (sp?) too.
2014-04-05 17:34:24 : <Hippy> Duocorns?
2014-04-05 17:34:46 : <dmac> Alien horses with two horns, as I recall.
2014-04-05 17:34:57 : <Hippy> I love those 'Beastmaster' stories. So disappointed that the TV series wasn't based on them.
2014-04-05 17:35:01 : <Gofffan> AFK to check on my business here ...
2014-04-05 17:36:09 : <Larry> I don't recall where the V material ended up.
2014-04-05 17:36:25 : <fredskuentz> k, thanks
2014-04-05 17:36:33 : <fredskuentz> at least hippy knows I wasn't imagining it
2014-04-05 17:36:34 : <fredskuentz> :)
2014-04-05 17:37:00 : <Hippy> Yes, but he is annoyed that you remembered something he didn't
2014-04-05 17:37:18 : <fredskuentz> hell, I remember stuff that never even happened
2014-04-05 17:37:21 : <Hippy> However, you're a better Googler than me. Myabe it's out there, somewhere
2014-04-05 17:38:06 : <fredskuentz> I don't have any of my ebooks here, sadly
2014-04-05 17:38:38 : <Hippy> Kind of defeats the purpose of ebooks, doesn't it? I have everything in boxes in storage :(
2014-04-05 17:39:03 : <fredskuentz> my books, physical and e, are all at moms
2014-04-05 17:39:14 : <Hippy> Ah, I see
2014-04-05 17:39:26 : <fredskuentz> whwere the rats are eating them
2014-04-05 17:39:44 : <Hippy> Now, this 'V', Larry. Was it the 1983 one or the new one?
2014-04-05 17:40:01 : <fredskuentz> 83
2014-04-05 17:40:07 : <sean> 83
2014-04-05 17:40:13 : <fredskuentz> or what sean said
2014-04-05 17:40:13 : <Hippy> What the? Fred, you are who Alister Toomey was based on in 'Inferno'
2014-04-05 17:40:27 : <fredskuentz> I have no idea what that means
2014-04-05 17:40:31 : <fredskuentz> so I assume 'no'
2014-04-05 17:40:43 : <Hippy> Oh, of course. If I'd thought that through, it would obviously be that one
2014-04-05 17:40:49 : <fredskuentz> :)
2014-04-05 17:41:02 : <fredskuentz> I just know that I first read it long before the revival series
2014-04-05 17:41:11 : <fredskuentz> which was really about obama
2014-04-05 17:41:21 : <Hippy> 'Alister Toomey' was the book collector in 'Inferno' that had a huge collection that he put in a barn and let the rats eat
2014-04-05 17:41:37 : <fredskuentz> oh
2014-04-05 17:41:38 : <fredskuentz> yeah
2014-04-05 17:41:43 : <fredskuentz> sometimes I fear
2014-04-05 17:41:52 : <fredskuentz> the rats are new
2014-04-05 17:42:04 : <sean> was there a new V series? the only one I know of if the beastmaster one
2014-04-05 17:42:05 : <fredskuentz> and I'm spending a lot of time and effort to eradicate them
2014-04-05 17:42:18 : <Hippy> You read it? Okay, this is now getting interesting...
2014-04-05 17:42:22 : <fredskuentz> sean, there was a new V seres a few years ago
2014-04-05 17:42:33 : <sean> was it worth a crap?
2014-04-05 17:42:34 : <fredskuentz> starring the girl I posted the snake pic of
2014-04-05 17:42:44 : <fredskuentz> and Morena Baccarin from Firefly
2014-04-05 17:42:49 : <fredskuentz> hmm
2014-04-05 17:42:51 : <fredskuentz> well
2014-04-05 17:42:52 : <dmac> and Homeland
2014-04-05 17:42:55 : <fredskuentz> it had cute girls
2014-04-05 17:43:00 : <fredskuentz> and the beastmaster guy
2014-04-05 17:43:04 : <fredskuentz> as a guest
2014-04-05 17:43:24 : <fredskuentz> but it ended with a cliffhangar
2014-04-05 17:43:32 : <sean> hmm.... baccarin might make it worth it.
2014-04-05 17:43:34 : <fredskuentz> so no satisfaction
2014-04-05 17:43:37 : <sean> ah
2014-04-05 17:43:40 : <fredskuentz> as dmac said
2014-04-05 17:43:46 : <fredskuentz> homeland for baccarin
2014-04-05 17:43:55 : <fredskuentz> nekkid baccarin
2014-04-05 17:44:09 : <Hippy> Oh, and we're back here again
2014-04-05 17:44:10 : <sean> well, i did not even know about firefly until a couple of years after it was cancelled
2014-04-05 17:44:37 : <sean> nekkid baccarin is worth a download
2014-04-05 17:44:55 : <ronn> Q.v. the cover of one of the paperback editions, right past _Ringworld_ at http://davidbrin.wordpress.com/2011/11/09/science-fiction-for-young-adul...
2014-04-05 17:45:00 : <Larry> (snake show is over.) It was the early V we critiqued.
2014-04-05 17:45:05 : <Hippy> I watched all the episodes in one surge and a few years later needed a glass eye. 'Nuff said.
2014-04-05 17:45:19 : <sean> i know about your eyes
2014-04-05 17:45:26 : <Hippy> I have to find that article, Larry
2014-04-05 17:45:36 : <fredskuentz> that's a fat ringworld
2014-04-05 17:45:43 : <Hippy> Yes, but you didn't know 'Firefly' caused them :)
2014-04-05 17:45:51 : <ronn> yep
2014-04-05 17:47:31 : <Hippy> Onc cannot beat Futurama for the best review ever: "That was so bad I think you gave me cancer."
2014-04-05 17:47:37 : <ronn> It's been awhile since I read it but I don't recall the text saying the flying snakes had legs like on that cover, just wings . . .
2014-04-05 17:48:06 : <fredskuentz> halfway down is a list of everything in PLAYGROUNDS
2014-04-05 17:48:07 : <fredskuentz> http://www.amazon.com/Playgrounds-Mind-Larry-Niven/dp/0812516958/ref=sr_...
2014-04-05 17:48:08 : <Larry> i love Futurama. Good wrapup too.
2014-04-05 17:48:42 : <Hippy> It's marvellous to see writers who know science fiction also have wit
2014-04-05 17:48:46 : <dmac> Of course there's Pip (Alan Dean Foster's flying snake)
2014-04-05 17:49:43 : <Larry> Folk, I'm going for food. Be right back.
2014-04-05 17:50:18 : <fredskuentz> get yourself something yummy
2014-04-05 17:50:28 : <fredskuentz> remember what marilyn says about wasted calories
2014-04-05 17:50:56 : <Hippy> What does she say?
2014-04-05 17:51:04 : <sean> I mentioned the alaspinian mini drag some time ago ;)
2014-04-05 17:51:26 : <dmac> Sean, of course. Sorry.
2014-04-05 17:51:45 : <sean> no worries mate
2014-04-05 17:52:00 : <Gofffan> Has anybody done a to scale CGI rendition of Ringworld? As accurate as can be depicted from the books?
2014-04-05 17:52:06 : <Gofffan> sorry about the right turn.
2014-04-05 17:52:23 : <Hippy> The waitress at Outback said that to me yesterday. It was so good to hear it
2014-04-05 17:52:24 : <dmac> I'm signing off. See you all next month. Same flying snake time, same flying snake cave. :)
2014-04-05 17:52:37 : <Hippy> I mean 'No worries'
2014-04-05 17:52:37 : <Gofffan> Bye dmac
2014-04-05 17:52:43 : <sean> actually... someone emailed me some time ago with a simulation for ....... thinking
2014-04-05 17:52:48 : <fredskuentz> gofffan, I have
2014-04-05 17:52:58 : <Gofffan> figured
2014-04-05 17:52:59 : "dmac" left the channel.
2014-04-05 17:53:11 : <Gofffan> Has larry seen it?
2014-04-05 17:53:12 : <Hippy> Dang, missed him
2014-04-05 17:53:18 : <fredskuentz> Hippy, she says to not get a cheap hot fudge sundae (which falls on tuesday this year)
2014-04-05 17:53:35 : <fredskuentz> don't waste calories on imitation whipped cream
2014-04-05 17:53:38 : <fredskuentz> stuff like that
2014-04-05 17:53:50 : <sean> or an add on for.... dang i can not remember
2014-04-05 17:53:59 : <Hippy> Good advice for a diabetic :)
2014-04-05 17:54:04 : <fredskuentz> heh
2014-04-05 17:54:15 : <sean> I will go back over my emails and find it.
2014-04-05 17:54:16 : <fredskuentz> gofff, I have no idea, I don't ask larry for critique
2014-04-05 17:54:40 : <Gofffan> just wondered how in his mind as he built the thing, if the reality matched
2014-04-05 17:55:02 : <fredskuentz> I'm not sure how completely Larry visualizes
2014-04-05 17:55:10 : <fredskuentz> a lot of word authors don't at all
2014-04-05 17:55:17 : <fredskuentz> I think he does more than most
2014-04-05 17:55:20 : <fredskuentz> but less than me
2014-04-05 17:55:23 : <Hippy> He would probably be amenable to where physics corrected it :)
2014-04-05 17:55:26 : <sean> agreed, fred
2014-04-05 17:55:36 : <fredskuentz> but most of humanity visualizes less than me
2014-04-05 17:55:48 : <Gofffan> I don't see what you're saying
2014-04-05 17:55:51 : <Hippy> Which reminds me to track down the Analog article where someone criticised the integral trees
2014-04-05 17:55:54 : <fredskuentz> okay
2014-04-05 17:56:02 : <fredskuentz> there are people that type words
2014-04-05 17:56:09 : <fredskuentz> but don't form mental images
2014-04-05 17:56:11 : <fredskuentz> AT ALL
2014-04-05 17:56:16 : <Gofffan> I was joking.
2014-04-05 17:56:18 : <fredskuentz> an example
2014-04-05 17:56:19 : <fredskuentz> oh
2014-04-05 17:56:20 : <fredskuentz> duh
2014-04-05 17:56:24 : <ronn> I suspect I come close.
2014-04-05 17:56:25 : <fredskuentz> and I had such a cute story
2014-04-05 17:56:34 : <Hippy> Well phrased, gofffan
2014-04-05 17:56:36 : <Gofffan> spill it
2014-04-05 17:56:41 : <fredskuentz> whew
2014-04-05 17:56:43 : <fredskuentz> okay
2014-04-05 17:56:49 : <fredskuentz> I was doing an educational film
2014-04-05 17:57:01 : <fredskuentz> script calls for Wesley the Weather Watcher
2014-04-05 17:57:51 : <fredskuentz> to be using one hand to hold his hat on against the wind; he's using his other hand to work a weather device, and he's using his other hand to use his weather watch to talk to base
2014-04-05 17:58:01 : <fredskuentz> and I'm like, um, this guy has 3 hands
2014-04-05 17:58:07 : <fredskuentz> producer insists he didn't
2014-04-05 17:58:14 : <fredskuentz> writer insists he didn't
2014-04-05 17:58:21 : <Larry> i'm back.
2014-04-05 17:58:23 : <fredskuentz> neither of them were making a mental image at all
2014-04-05 17:58:33 : <fredskuentz> nor were they apparently capable of counting to 3
2014-04-05 17:58:41 : <Larry> I'm a highly visual writer. Honest.
2014-04-05 17:58:59 : <ronn> So glad for Photoshop and similar things so
2014-04-05 17:59:00 : <ronn> i can finally actually show other people what I'm envisioning 'cuz my freehand drawing skills are lacking.
2014-04-05 17:59:01 : <Hippy> Damn good example, Fred
2014-04-05 17:59:07 : <fredskuentz> I had to freaking DRAW A STORYBOARD to convince them that he had 3 hands
2014-04-05 17:59:20 : <sean> I know larry... your Louis Wu viewpoint of dawn on the ringworld proves it at the very least.
2014-04-05 17:59:36 : <fredskuentz> he found it artistically stimulating
2014-04-05 17:59:54 : <fredskuentz> larry, yes, I would agree you are
2014-04-05 18:00:01 : <fredskuentz> but I'm like 98%
2014-04-05 18:00:06 : <Hippy> Actually, the best proof of Larry's visual writing is Louis Wu's daydream about Fist of God, and his statement that he lost mathematics at the point where he couldno longer visualise what was happening
2014-04-05 18:00:22 : <fredskuentz> I'd actually create the image and then form the words to describe it :)
2014-04-05 18:00:37 : <Gofffan> that's how you read, Larry. So Ringworld was pretty much a solid object in your mind as you wrote about it.
2014-04-05 18:00:44 : <ronn> Remember the newscast which informed us that a three-armed bandit had just robbed a bank
2014-04-05 18:00:45 : <ronn> (as opposed to "three armed bandits") . . .
2014-04-05 18:00:59 : <Gofffan> :)
2014-04-05 18:01:18 : <Hippy> Well, there's a lot of radiation in New Mexico
2014-04-05 18:01:26 : <fredskuentz> and japan
2014-04-05 18:01:46 : <fredskuentz> larry, what did you get to eat?
2014-04-05 18:01:47 : <Hippy> LOL! Yes, that's what I should've said
2014-04-05 18:02:22 : <sean> and the unlicensed nuclear reactor about 93 million miles away.
2014-04-05 18:02:25 : <ronn> Fred eat me to the question.
2014-04-05 18:02:33 : <fredskuentz> hee hee
2014-04-05 18:02:37 : <fredskuentz> if that was a typo
2014-04-05 18:02:39 : <fredskuentz> it was a beaut
2014-04-05 18:02:49 : <ronn> That's "beat."
still applauds
2014-04-05 18:03:00 : <ronn> Yep.
2014-04-05 18:03:15 : <Larry> blue cheese on whole wheat toast, and tomato soup.
2014-04-05 18:03:45 : <Gofffan> nice combo
2014-04-05 18:03:51 : <Hippy> Tum
2014-04-05 18:03:55 : <fredskuentz> ronn, deliberate or not, good stuff
2014-04-05 18:04:07 : <fredskuentz> I wish I still liked tomato soup
2014-04-05 18:04:14 : <fredskuentz> that was one of those things I loved as a kid
2014-04-05 18:04:20 : <fredskuentz> it was one of mom's favorites
2014-04-05 18:04:42 : <fredskuentz> and I went back to revisit it after 4 or 5 decades and ... found it lacking
2014-04-05 18:04:57 : <fredskuentz> I dunno if it changed or I changed or we both grew apart or what
2014-04-05 18:05:08 : <sean> you changed
2014-04-05 18:05:14 : <fredskuentz> probably
2014-04-05 18:05:14 : <ronn> Hopefully the latter was more appetizing looking than the bowl of leftover same I found in the fridge and threw out earlier today . . .
2014-04-05 18:05:45 : <fredskuentz> I have several cans of tomato soup that need a home
2014-04-05 18:05:46 : <Larry> as our taste buds get old they lose sensitivity. We need more spices in our tomato soup.
2014-04-05 18:06:12 : <fredskuentz> is that why my Dad would salt food until it was white?
2014-04-05 18:06:41 : <sean> probably.... but I recommend Johnny Chacheres Creole seasoning
2014-04-05 18:06:42 : <Larry> yes, Fred
2014-04-05 18:06:46 : <Hippy> It's why I mustad everything
2014-04-05 18:06:51 : <ronn> Progresso now has tomato with bacon and cheese soup.
2014-04-05 18:06:57 : <fredskuentz> I just always assumed he'd always eaten that way
2014-04-05 18:07:32 : <Gofffan> tomato, bacon and cheese doesn't sound like a soup
Spicey foods
2014-04-05 18:08:37 : <ronn> It's pretty good. No, it doesn't have strips of bacon floating in it.
2014-04-05 18:08:53 : <Larry> makes a good sandwich combo.
2014-04-05 18:08:55 : <Gofffan> okay --- maybe I'l give it a go
2014-04-05 18:09:38 : <fredskuentz> okay, goff
2014-04-05 18:09:39 : <fredskuentz> http://www.larryniven.net/media.shtml
2014-04-05 18:09:45 : <sean> spicier the better in my opinion.
2014-04-05 18:09:45 : <fredskuentz> they may not work anymore
2014-04-05 18:09:54 : <fredskuentz> all the stuff here is more than 10 years old
2014-04-05 18:10:03 : <fredskuentz> but I built my ringworld to scale
2014-04-05 18:10:07 : <fredskuentz> 93m r
2014-04-05 18:10:42 : <fredskuentz> and
2014-04-05 18:10:47 : <fredskuentz> the links are all broken
2014-04-05 18:10:49 : <fredskuentz> never mind
2014-04-05 18:10:50 : <fredskuentz> :)
2014-04-05 18:11:15 : <ronn> Dunno why, but just plain tomato soup is more likely to be too to me acid than the versions with added spicy stuff . . .
2014-04-05 18:12:13 : <Larry> gentlefolk, it has been a fun day. Thanks for the snakefest. I need to resume life.
2014-04-05 18:12:22 : "Larry" left the channel.
2014-04-05 18:12:27 : <fredskuentz> take care of yourself larry
2014-04-05 18:12:32 : <fredskuentz> tanj
2014-04-05 18:12:33 : <sean> hmmm...
2014-04-05 18:12:54 : <sean> i was about to ask if i could email him with update questions for the web site
2014-04-05 18:13:13 : <fredskuentz> you could email him and ask if you can email him
2014-04-05 18:13:29 : <sean> he has named it his official site and it is not as good as i want
2014-04-05 18:13:30 : <sean> yeah
2014-04-05 18:13:34 : <sean> i will
2014-04-05 18:13:38 : <fredskuentz> I have a borderline retarded cousin who called me recently to get my phone number
2014-04-05 18:13:56 : <sean> hopefully i dont come off that bad
2014-04-05 18:14:14 : <fredskuentz> no, you don't seem like a relation
2014-04-05 18:14:17 : <fredskuentz> :D
2014-04-05 18:14:22 : <sean> lol
2014-04-05 18:14:59 : <fredskuentz> the poor guy is really lonely but not intellectually stimulating
2014-04-05 18:15:14 : <fredskuentz> I can feel my brain drying up as we speak
2014-04-05 18:15:27 : <ronn> Fred: I just realized you meant ringworld stuff when you said "all the stuff here is more than 10 years old," not the tomato soup you have on hand . . .
2014-04-05 18:15:36 : <fredskuentz> lol
2014-04-05 18:15:39 : <sean> my gf is a special ed teacher so i know what you mean
2014-04-05 18:15:47 : <fredskuentz> okay, YOU sound like a relative
2014-04-05 18:17:28 : <ronn> That may be because I wouldn't be surprised if I found a ten-year old can in the back of one of the cabinets here . . .
2014-04-05 18:17:38 : <fredskuentz> the guy's mother (mom's sister) died last year and his GF of 12 years or something keeled over a couple weeks later
2014-04-05 18:17:39 : <Hippy> ....and back, with beer
2014-04-05 18:18:01 : <Gofffan> guys - I gotta go. Thanks for the interesting conversaton and laughs. Next month - I hope ...
2014-04-05 18:18:11 : <fredskuentz> good to see you goff
2014-04-05 18:18:23 : <Gofffan> same back
2014-04-05 18:18:26 : <fredskuentz> I'm probably not on NautSub any more after today
2014-04-05 18:18:26 : <ronn> see ya
2014-04-05 18:18:40 : <fredskuentz> but I'll be at the email, and here, and at the facebook group
2014-04-05 18:18:41 : <Gofffan> wait - what????
2014-04-05 18:18:51 : <Hippy> 'Bye, Gofffan
2014-04-05 18:18:54 : <Gofffan> I'll email
2014-04-05 18:18:57 : <fredskuentz> lol, k
2014-04-05 18:18:58 : "Gofffan" left the channel.
2014-04-05 18:19:09 : <fredskuentz> I guess he missed ... the incident
2014-04-05 18:20:00 : <Hippy> Okay, the record (of my personal experience) is 22 years for old food
2014-04-05 18:20:01 : <sean> what did you do
2014-04-05 18:20:17 : <Hippy> Now, this only counts food within the actual chat community
2014-04-05 18:20:20 : <sean> the plaque?
2014-04-05 18:20:28 : <ronn> Finding or eating?
2014-04-05 18:20:32 : <fredskuentz> I have food that's certainly 10 years old in the back of my pantry
2014-04-05 18:20:48 : <fredskuentz> I doubt 22
2014-04-05 18:20:53 : <fredskuentz> I don't think my house is that old
2014-04-05 18:20:53 : <fredskuentz> :)
2014-04-05 18:20:56 : <Hippy> Obviously the record would be Egyptian honey at 5000+ years, or maybe edible mammoth at 20000+ years
2014-04-05 18:21:30 : <Hippy> No, not eaten, merely found on your premises
2014-04-05 18:22:47 : <ronn> This house was built in 1957 and we moved in in August 1964.
2014-04-05 18:22:48 : <Hippy> My personal record is 24 years, but that is wine - and I only bought it nine years ago
2014-04-05 18:23:11 : <sean> sounds tasty... bring it up here. ;)
2014-04-05 18:23:16 : <fredskuentz> I have booze that's more than 25 years old
2014-04-05 18:23:32 : <fredskuentz> including Saurian Brandy
2014-04-05 18:23:47 : <Hippy> If only! I only hope it made it through the stupid, Prohibiton-era Customs laws in this country
2014-04-05 18:24:03 : <fredskuentz> the saurian brandy I've had since ... I was too young to legally own it
2014-04-05 18:24:06 : <sean> a specially inscribed bottle fred?
2014-04-05 18:24:11 : <fredskuentz> so 40 years
2014-04-05 18:24:25 : <Hippy> I had 15 dozen wines but most of them went to my sister because of the duty on importing wine here
2014-04-05 18:24:37 : <fredskuentz> it's the George Dickel bottle they made the Saurian from, sean, with a commemorative lamp
2014-04-05 18:24:55 : <sean> george dickel is good stuff
2014-04-05 18:25:02 : <Hippy> Bloody hell, Fred
2014-04-05 18:26:23 : <fredskuentz> yeah, george is great
2014-04-05 18:26:40 : <fredskuentz> I could see drinking too much of it on a regular basis quite easily
2014-04-05 18:27:00 : <sean> since you cant drink anymore... you could donate your stash to my cause. ;) I think I am channeling frank
2014-04-05 18:27:42 : <fredskuentz> http://www.georgedickelrcs.com/History%20Shots/7-bottles.jpg
2014-04-05 18:27:49 : <fredskuentz> I still have the box too
2014-04-05 18:27:55 : <fredskuentz> 3rd from the right
2014-04-05 18:27:58 : <Hippy> I think I shall hunt it out
2014-04-05 18:29:17 : <Hippy> And here is an interview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-PF32jdqkw
2014-04-05 18:29:46 : <fredskuentz> I can't google up the lamp
2014-04-05 18:29:52 : <fredskuentz> even on the dickel site
2014-04-05 18:29:59 : <fredskuentz> makes me wonder how rare this thing might be
2014-04-05 18:30:33 : <sean> I can drive out there and pick it up if you want...;)
2014-04-05 18:31:21 : <Hippy> Bloody rare, Fred
2014-04-05 18:31:36 : <fredskuentz> I just sort of thought everybody had one
2014-04-05 18:31:50 : <Hippy> Heh
2014-04-05 18:31:51 : <fredskuentz> mom had to special order the bottle from her liquor store
2014-04-05 18:31:56 : <fredskuentz> and it came with the lamp
2014-04-05 18:32:26 : <fredskuentz> distributer just gave it to us
2014-04-05 18:32:45 : <ronn> I see tonight's episode on MeTV is "Spock's Brain" . . .
2014-04-05 18:32:51 : <fredskuentz> NOOOOOO
2014-04-05 18:33:02 : <fredskuentz> it's also the RETURN OF WONDER WOMAN
2014-04-05 18:33:07 : <fredskuentz> first ep in the 1970s
2014-04-05 18:33:55 : <fredskuentz> jesus
2014-04-05 18:34:01 : <fredskuentz> sky just opened up
2014-04-05 18:34:04 : <fredskuentz> and dumped
2014-04-05 18:34:25 : <Hippy> Weather is better than TV
2014-04-05 18:34:28 : <fredskuentz> wow
2014-04-05 18:34:35 : <fredskuentz> it sounded like it was hailing
2014-04-05 18:34:39 : <fredskuentz> but there's not a cloud
2014-04-05 18:36:00 : <fredskuentz> I think we must have gotten a microburst that dumped my gravel front yard on my roof
2014-04-05 18:36:02 : <ronn> Oh.
2014-04-05 18:36:03 : <ronn> Until the third line I was thinking maybe you were saying it was the second coming . . .
2014-04-05 18:36:14 : <fredskuentz> lol
2014-04-05 18:36:44 : <ronn> Well, it is general conference weekend.
2014-04-05 18:36:47 : <fredskuentz> hah
2014-04-05 18:36:48 : <fredskuentz> got one
2014-04-05 18:36:51 : <fredskuentz> are you ready?
2014-04-05 18:36:52 : <fredskuentz> https://www.flickr.com/photos/23056599@N00/12754234234/
2014-04-05 18:37:32 : <Hippy> You're one of the great searchers, Fred
2014-04-05 18:37:46 : <Dan_AFK> Break time again... This is proving more difficult than I had hoped, but I've made real progress.
2014-04-05 18:39:10 : <ronn> I may have missed what you are making progress on?
2014-04-05 18:39:58 : <Dan_AFK> Two car cameras and two sets of fog lights.
2014-04-05 18:40:00 : <Dan_AFK> https://www.facebook.com/dan.hollifield/media_set?set=a.1020320824254378...
2014-04-05 18:41:40 : <Dan_AFK> I've been attempting the final wiring today, and have run up against the van's engineering being Asian rather than Detroit. LOL!
2014-04-05 18:42:11 : <fredskuentz> metric wiring
2014-04-05 18:42:29 : <Dan_AFK> The next thing I have to do is drill holes in the bodywork to run the wires.
2014-04-05 18:43:04 : <ronn> Since they mandated rear-view cameras on all cars in a couple of tears I've been thinking I have an old Instamatic I can attach to the bumper with a couple of nylon cable ties . . .
2014-04-05 18:43:23 : <Dan_AFK> Maybe 3 holes, about 1/2" diameter.
2014-04-05 18:44:13 : <Dan_AFK> ronn!, there are wireless cameras & monitors. But the batteries usually have a 4-hour charge.
2014-04-05 18:44:25 : <fredskuentz> lol, dan, on all new cars sold
2014-04-05 18:44:39 : <fredskuentz> not on 'cars already on the road'
2014-04-05 18:45:00 : <Dan_AFK> What I'm installing is hardwired, power & ground & camera signal.
2014-04-05 18:45:01 : <ronn> Anyone got a Barrett they could use to make the holes for Dan?
2014-04-05 18:45:42 : <Dan_AFK> I have a Craftsman drill, and I ain't afraid to use it, LOL!
2014-04-05 18:46:57 : <Dan_AFK> The photos on that link I posted show the progress I've made before today. I haven't taken any pics today, though. Not made enough progress, LOL!
2014-04-05 18:48:21 : <Hippy> If you have a wireless camera, you can put your car's view on YouTube. Awesome!
2014-04-05 18:48:27 : <ronn> Well, so do I (more than one, as well as a couple of B&D), but wouldn't https://www.barrett.net/firearms/model82a1 be more fun?
likes firearms
2014-04-05 18:50:16 : <Dan_AFK> The bad news for today is that one of the covers I had to take off for the luggage rack rails on the van shattered into a billion fragments. I'll have to go to the dealer and order a replacement. The good news is that I tested the cameras & lights without actually installing everything and it all works perfectly. All that's left is to route the necessary wires through the car body.
2014-04-05 18:50:38 : <ronn> Hippy: That's all we need on-line: everybody's rear-view camera videos . . .
2014-04-05 18:51:34 : <ronn> How long did it take to count the fragments?
2014-04-05 18:52:04 : <Dan_AFK> When I'm done, I'll have a forward and a rear view IR-capable camera, two sets of fog lights, and a 7" monitor to mount on the dash next to my GPS.
2014-04-05 18:53:20 : <ronn> What? No missile launchers or oil-slick dispenser?
2014-04-05 18:53:50 : <Dan_AFK> ronn!, I didn't count them, I just swept up the fragments and guestimated the total. Let's just say that a plactic piece the size of a shoe shouldn't have bits the size of a grain of sand needing to be superglued back together, LOL!
2014-04-05 18:54:23 : <Hippy> In the coming zombie apocalypse, Dan will be...well-documented
2014-04-05 18:54:53 : <Dan_AFK> I'll have footage of every zombie I run down!
2014-04-05 18:55:42 : <Dan_AFK> Hmmm, that reminds me, how much do railroad ties cost these days, I might need a reinforced front bumper...
2014-04-05 18:58:04 : <ronn> Well, this has been fun, but I think I need to go have a little lie-down. See all of you next month.
2014-04-05 18:58:40 : "ronn" left the channel.
2014-04-05 18:59:01 : <Dan_AFK> In any case, I'm glad I have tomorrow off as well as today. I've probably got a couple more hours of daylight left to work in. I'm not going to finish today, but I might get the wires run and the weatherproofing done before tomorrow night's thunderstorms.
2014-04-05 19:01:44 : <Hippy> Oh, from this interview on YouTube: "Smart means vigilant"
is pondering attempting the trip up to Dan. He might as well...
2014-04-05 19:03:03 : <Dan_AFK> Darren, what are your plans?
2014-04-05 19:04:04 : <Hippy> No real plans...but since it can be done, it should. I'm aware of your plans, though. If the DHS come a-calling, I can say "Well, I went to Georgia".
is on a tourist visa, goddamnit!
2014-04-05 19:05:53 : <Dan_AFK> If you plan a flight to Atlanta rather than Chattanooga, Lyn & I could pick you up and you could ride to LibertyCon with us.
2014-04-05 19:06:37 : <Hippy> Ah, that part is already sorted: Hippy via Lexington and Frankfort
2014-04-05 19:06:59 : <Dan_AFK> OK, then you'll be riding down from there with Sean!
2014-04-05 19:07:07 : <Hippy> And I must fly back the same way because Homeland Secrity does NOT LIKE one way trips
2014-04-05 19:07:24 : <Hippy> With Sean, indeed
2014-04-05 19:08:07 : <Dan_AFK> Then all you need to do is plan the music you want Sean to play during the drive, LOL!
2014-04-05 19:08:54 : <Hippy> But I see no good reason to not come up anyway
2014-04-05 19:09:42 : <Hippy> It appears to be a couple of bus rides
2014-04-05 19:10:03 : <Dan_AFK> Well, Lyn would be happy if you visited us, but I must warn you that the spare bed is an inflatable mattress.
2014-04-05 19:10:41 : <Hippy> Perfectly acceptable - if I'm drunk enough :)
2014-04-05 19:10:50 : <Dan_AFK> Bus rides? OK Mega-Bus is the best price.
2014-04-05 19:11:50 : <Dan_AFK> Drunk enough? You do remember to whom you are speaking? I did drink both you and Sean under the table last year, LOL!
2014-04-05 19:12:23 : <Hippy> Thanks, Dan. I know litle of buses here and am a little scared to even take buses in Orlando, but you two (and particularly your wife's accent) make it worthwhile to come up there
2014-04-05 19:13:15 : <Hippy> That you did, sir, and I'm mortally embarrassed that you have told everyone here :)
2014-04-05 19:13:16 : <Dan_AFK> Proudest moment of my life was to walk a Kentucky Derby Party vet AND an Aussie to their rooms so I could get back to the bar, LOL!
2014-04-05 19:14:13 : <Hippy> Hmm. Expect no more proud moments, Dan
2014-04-05 19:15:34 : <Dan_AFK> I'll take that as a challenge, writer-of-mine. :)
2014-04-05 19:16:07 : <Dan_AFK> Farm-Boy works best when well-intoxicated.
2014-04-05 19:16:54 : <Hippy> Oh, I should - ah, my publisher. Still the best greeting ever. I must concentrate on aphelion more
2014-04-05 19:16:55 : <Dan_AFK> But rest assures, we will have plenty of V-8 on stock.
2014-04-05 19:17:38 : <Hippy> How does a drink for Larry's birthday sound?
2014-04-05 19:19:21 : <Dan_AFK> I'll toast Larry any chance I get! The Man has gifted me with years of reading, and coincidental friendships among fellow fans.
2014-04-05 19:20:34 : <Hippy> Very well. That suggests a meeting around April 30. Who else is up for that?
2014-04-05 19:20:48 : <Dan_AFK> OK, time for me to go back outdoors before I lose all of today's remaining daylight.
2014-04-05 19:21:18 : <Hippy> Okay, see you around April 30th
2014-04-05 19:21:29 : <Dan_AFK> E-mail me with the relivant details, Darren. Bless you and keep yopu safe until then!
2014-04-05 19:22:05 : <Hippy> Thank you, sir, and my regards to your wife :)
2014-04-05 19:23:45 : "Jim" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 19:24:07 : <Jim> You all are still here?
2014-04-05 19:26:52 : <Hippy> Oh, yes
2014-04-05 19:27:43 : <Hippy> Listening to this Google inerview with Larry and Greg Benford
2014-04-05 19:38:57 : <Hippy> Righto, I have been summoned to walk the dogs (as if they didn't get enough exercise from barking at me all day), but I shall email Dan with my thoughts on a visit
2014-04-05 19:39:27 : <Hippy> And now, off to satisfy the aforementioned dogs
2014-04-05 19:39:50 : <Hippy> See y'all (if I may so lapse into the vernacular) in May
2014-04-05 19:40:23 : "Hippy" left the channel.
2014-04-05 19:48:41 : "Jim" left the channel.
2014-04-05 20:21:24 : <Dan_AFK> RAn out of daylight ! Taking another break ...
2014-04-05 20:40:30 : "Hippy" joined the channel.
2014-04-05 20:40:53 : <Hippy> Now, hold on, did I leave this channel?
2014-04-05 20:41:43 : <Hippy> I stepped out briefly to walk the dogs, but then when I came back I had apparently logged out of this
2014-04-05 21:03:47 : <sean> type a bit more on wireless cams.
2014-04-05 21:14:20 : <Hippy> Well, the point is that I hope I left decorously. I shall return next month :)
2014-04-05 21:14:55 : <Hippy> Dan, I will advise you of my thoughts re: Georgia
2014-04-05 21:15:40 : <Hippy> And now, the evening meal awaits
2014-04-05 21:15:45 : "Hippy" left the channel.
Dan
2014-04-05 22:03:01 : <Dan> All right, my section of the Saturday Night Britcoms has ended. Lyn still has several more to go, however. :)
2014-04-05 22:09:18 : "Dan" left the channel.
2014-04-05 23:55:09 : <fredskuentz> Wow. Remember earlier I said I might have gotten hit by a microburst?
2014-04-05 23:55:36 : <fredskuentz> I just went outside and found my garbage cans tossed 20 feet and around a corner.
